My hagwan contract runs up in the beginning of March (bad timing!) and I'd like to try and find a public school position for the beginning of April, or as close to as possible.

Should I go through a recruiter? Walk into schools and try to ask if they'll be hiring? Everyone I know who knows what they're talking about says I need to find someone who's leaving at that time and replace them ... but I only know of one position that I'd want and my friend's not sure if he's leaving or extending.

I interview well and will have good recommendations from my current employer, I just don't know how to proceed ...

Fortunately, all of the schools don't hire at the same time. They often try, but I started my job May 31st last year and one of my good friends started her job in July. We are both at public high schools. We used recruiters, but if you have a friend who knows of an opening, that is also a good way to go about things.

Going through a recruiter is the easiest way, but dont limit yourself to one. They will have more leads on mid-term hires than you would find banging on school doors. You can't be too choosy about where in korea you will end up, but they will have the most positions to offer.

You could also contact the Provincial Education Offices directly if you had a location preference. It's not that difficult to find the Foreign Teacher Coordinator for the various POE offices and email them.

And you dont really avoid the February orientations....you usually just delay it until the summer. They still generally make you sit through a week of kimchimilation whether you've already been here for 4 months at your school or four years in korea - Everybody gets conformity training when they start at a PS.

go ahead and ask the schools directly. when I started, I was told to go through a recruiter when I tried to do it directly from the GEPIK website. But that's just GEPIK. I'm leaving in March. Why don't you post your location preference and see if anyone else is ending their contract at the same time.

well I'm in Suwon now and I'd like to stay here, but like was mentioned earlier, can't be too choosy

The possible opening is a Gepik position, makes 2.1. It's a little less than I make now, but I think it'd be worth it for the vacation time and to not deal with hagwan nonsense! I'll be going back to school after next year anyhow (possibly in korea Smile

How would i get in touch with the provincial education office? i'll do a websearch after work today, too

The topic of Hagwon Vs PS has been done to death, but seriously, don't get your hopes up too high. Vacation time is dwindling on PS contracts, and replace hagwon bosses with a potentially psycho/useless/lazy co-teacher, think big class sizes, massive differences in English ability, less money, summer and winter camps, ceremonies, open classes, so I'd hunt around for a good hagwon if I were you.

Interesting topic. I finish my Hakwon position towards the end of March too, so an April public school gig on the East side of Seoul is ideally what I want. Probably pretty hard to find unfortunately
