My school has asked me to teach a one to one conversational class with a English High School teacher. She comes into the school in the evening and i met her last week. We chatted and her level of english is very good. However her speech is very rigid which is to expected as she rarely gets the opportunity to chat to anyone in fluent english. When she teaches her kids its all straight from the books.

She wants me to help her become more confindent and to be able to speak english with more ease.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice. I've had lots of advice already but they are all for big classes, this is just the 2 of us.

I have english books for her to read and want her to watch an english film without subtitles so we can discuss it.....ummmmm WHAT ELSE? I usually teach kindergarten and elementary, HELP!!!!!!

Not quite true.

As long as the lessons take place in the school, the student is registered there and you get paid as part of yoru normal pay (or OT rate) then its all good.

As for advice:

1 on 1 teaching can be tough and requires a a different approach.

If your student wants free-talking type lessons then you should find books that focus on this. These books typically offer a weekly lesson topic that wil spark converstion. The lower level stuff includes key vocabulary for each topic.

What you can do is buy this book and hand out copies to your student one week before each lesson. You will then have a set topic. If your lesson time allows it, have part of it dedicated to the book/topic and the second part dedicated to more free flowing conversation on another topic (ex: current events).

All this being said, it can be tough to generate conversation 1 on 1, especially if the student is taking the lead from the teacher and if said teacher is not properly prepared.
