Sleep! It's Non-Negotiable

A good night's sleep isn't just about hitting the ground running in the morning. If you get the seven to nine hours experts advise, you can expect these added benefits:

Fewer sniffles

People who get less than 7 hours per night are three times likelier to catch colds, according to a Journal of the American Medical Association study. Reason: Sleep boosts immunity; too little impairs it.

A trimmer waistline

People who logged seven to nine hours a night had an average BMI of 24.8almost 2 points lower than the average BMI of those who slept less, University of Washington researchers found. Too-little sleep may throw off hormones that regulate appetite.

Lower risk of heart disease and diabetes

Lack of sleep is associated with higher levels of stress hormones that may raise blood pressure and affect glucose metabolism. A new study found that the risk for high blood pressure among insomniacs who slept less than five hours per night was 500 times greater than those who logged more than six hours. And insomniacs who slept less than five hours were three times likelier to have diabetes, compared with those without insomnia who slept more than six hours.

4 ways to sleep more deeply

Want to hit the hay earlier?

1) Gradually advance your bedtime by 15 minutes a night.

2) Dim the lights in your home about an hour before bed, and start a routine that tells your body it's time to snooze (put on pajamas, brush teeth, wash face).

3) Avoid the TV and computer.

4) Meditate or do light stretching. People who relax in the evening fall asleep about 30 minutes sooner than those who don't and get an extra hour of sleep.

The amount of sleep one gets depends on your neighbours, you can do all the meditating you want, once your neighbours start playing card games until the early morning, or the couple above you start fighting at 2am on a regular basis, kiss goodbye to your sanity.

My new pad is quite a dump and in a poor area, but at least my neighbours are quiet most of the time. Can't say the same thing about the guy who walks around with a loud speaker at 6.30 in the morning blaring out some message about cheap computers and cameras, he's going to get that thing rammed up his behind soon.

"Recommended 7 to 9 hours"??? Shocked

I get 5 hours at best (note to above: earplugs help!) during the week. I'd need 28 hour days to get that much (sniffle). Weekends I sleep 4-5 hours longer but go to bed 5-6 hours later, bleh.

(4) confuses me: fall asleep 30 minutes earlier to get 60 minutes more sleep? So if I fall asleep 90 minutes earlier, do I get 3 hours more sleep or still just 60 mins?

i can see getting 7 hours of sleep some nights, but anyone who can get 9 hours a night most nights has no life, or no job. for me that would mean going to sleep at 10pm every night.

Just sleep when you're tired.
Just eat when you're hungry.

Going to sleep earlier is self defeating. I just wake up earlier. Same old 7 hours a night.

President Lee Myung-bak is reported to get just four to five hours a sleep per night, but the bad thing is, he expects his staff to do the same. Rolling Eyes

How do people function on 5 hours?
I insist on 8 hours. Otherwise I am just not myself. I am more moody, lazier and just waiting for the day to be over.

But I find I can never go to sleep earlier than the night before unless I didn't get enough sleep the night before.

I've recently started using this: http://www.simplynoise.com/ hooked up to an amp because of the racket outside my apartment at night. Combine it with a noise fader-outer program or whatever and it gets me less homicidal when I hear some warbling song that makes me wanna start shooting people.

When I get enough sleep- I am cool, collective and calm.

If I don't get enough sleep- I get horny and try to screw anything that moves and is on two legs.

I almost slept with the mother of someone from this board.

Use that as a warning!
Get some sleep or end up like me Crying or Very sad
