I teach a class 3 times a week in a Elementary school for 40 minutes first thing in the morning. Then I teach at 3 at my hogwon.

There have been loads of new students in the morning class and because I have already taught about half of the students for the past year the ability in the class is hugely different. Some are almost beginners where as the ones I have taught know what I am trying to teach the younger ones.

This means I am trying to juggle keeping everyone entertained and happy.

Then my boss says how to you teach different abilities? I was like its hard and in the typical Korean female way she show signs of complaining.

Any ideas on how to teach the class?

I am not using a book and I am teaching them the Alphabet and numbers. There are some that just dont listen or want to be there or just dont understand where as others pick it up and have fun.

HELP ME PLEASE

Funny replies or you are doomed are welcome...

One thing that always gets my beginners fizzing is the old battleship game. Draw up your own grid and photocopy it off. Make them say the letter and a word that begins with it followed by the depth charge number. They'll have heaps of fun and learn. It takes a good 30 to 50 minutes a game.

Alphabet bingo is a good standby.

when they call out a letter, tell them they have to say a word that begins with that letter too. Most kids will know something for most letters- (J,Q, X and Z are difficult though)

Have the "old" students be "teachers" for the new students! Make it a competition. Which ever "old student" group teaches the "new student" group the best gets a prize!

Ajuma made an excellent suggestion, mentoring is a very successful way to get some of the slower kids to learn and it is also a cultural element of their lives that they understand. Instant rewards when they get it right work effectively too. Smile
