Just spreading the truth...

Koreans Don't Have Big Faces, Study Finds
A study by the Korea Food and Drug Administration seems to contradict the stereotype that Koreans have bigger faces than Caucasians.

The KFDA measured the facial dimensions of 387 adults and 304 children and adolescents between 2007 and 2009 and found that the average Korean male's face was 419 sq. cm in area or about 92 percent the size of Caucasian males' 453 sq. cm. The face of the average Korean woman measured 371 sq. cm, a little smaller than the average Caucasian woman's 380 sq. cm.

Experts say the faces of Koreans appear to be bigger due to a kind of optical illusion. "Koreans tend to have relatively flatter facial features than Caucasians so they could be perceived as having bigger faces, but from a three-dimensional perspective, Caucasians have bigger faces," said Cho Yong-jin, head of the Face Research Institute.

The faces of Koreans tend to spread out sideways, while those of Caucasians protrude. "Even if the actual face is small, prominent cheek bones or jaws can make a face appear bigger," said Park Sang-hoon, a plastic surgeon at ID Hospital.

However, the KFDA said it used data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the facial dimensions of Caucasians and acknowledged that errors could be possible due to differences in measuring. The KFDA measured the faces of Koreans, while facial sizes in the U.S. data were determined by taking the entire area of a person's head and deeming the face to take up one-third.

Wow! It's good to know that the KFDA is putting its taxpayer-sourced funds towards real, life-saving research Rolling Eyes

I wonder if we are expected to get upset about this...

Good point, but I can't think of anything this useless. I'm Australian. Feel free to find and link to anything that proves me wrong. And I mean a government department - The TGA is the KFDA equivalent in Oz. I know that people get grants for seemingly pointless research, but for the KFDA to do this kind of research.... you've gotta wonder why.

I wouldn't say that this study is useless....anything that might help prevent Koreans from getting unnecessary plastic surgery on their face would certainly be beneficial to the overall health of society.

One of my students got her double-eyelids done over winter break and it looks so ridiculous.

Yes, but relative to their bodies their heads are big. That's great that, in general and on average, a Korean head is 92% the size of a caucasian head. That means nothing if the average Korean body is 80% the size of a caucasian body (just making that number up to illustrate the point). Sure, the head might be smaller, but relative to the body is it bigger. It's like saying a 200 lbs adult male is fatter than a 150 lbs teenage girl without taking in consideration anything else.

I say all this purely to show the flaw in the methodology of the study. I couldn't care less who has big or small heads.

I thought Koreans had big faces, rather than big heads.

The US government once spent something like $200,000 to determine exactly how long it took to hard boil two eggs for breakfast... lol

My government can't do any useless research, it uses up all its money paying all of its employees between 5 and 8 times what they realistically would be earning in the private sector, plus large raises, bonuses and extra benefits every time the spoiled bastards go on strike (often)

I love how there is a Face Research Institute. And that he's the HEAD of the Face Research Institute.

" The KFDA measured the faces of Koreans, while facial sizes in the U.S. data were determined by taking the entire area of a person's head and deeming the face to take up one-third."

I'm all for useless research, but this is kind of a major issue in methodology. I mean, if they needed Caucasian heads to measure, they could just ask. The results could be the same, but the difference in measurements takes it from odd but relevant to completely useless number that means nothing without an adequate control.

I am excited to see this study referenced in a Livescience.com article, though... and the ensuing flamewars.

Now we know why Koreans are so adamant about saving face. They apparently don't have as much to start with.

Either that, or they purposely selected koreans who were in the smaller range.

Besides, the issue is that their heads are proportionately larger- with reference to their overall body. Shoulders etc.

Koreans definitely have larger heads. Its an obvious and striking feature. genetic trait caused by centuries of being an isolated population. Not saying its a flaw, i think its quite cute in a way. Caucasians tend to be taller, so what? Its called diversity. Nothing to be ashamed of.
