I have a chance to get a US Sprint IPhone 4S here in America (home for Christmas). It is a world phone CDMA, I understand that it works with the South Korea frequencies just fine. What would I have to do to "register" it in Korea? I would need a Korean SIM, and then I need to give my ESN or something to the service provider, right?
I already have monthly service from LG and I would prefer to keep my existing LG monthly account.
If I bring an unlocked Spring IPhone 4S from America, can I register it to replace my existing Korean phone on my existing Korean monthly LG service.

Hmmm, after reading my question, I think I need to call LG customer service to ask, but I would love to hear what anyone here has to say too,
Thanks, Drew

Well, I did just call LG. They said it is not possible to register an unlocked Iphone 4S on their service.
First she said that the international Iphone 4S is not compatible with Korean SIM cards. I think she might have been mistaken on that point because the Sprint Iphone 4S is supposed to be a world phone.
Next she said I couldn't do it anyway because LG doesn't offer IPhone 4S service. I didn't know that the IPhone 4S needed a "special" service, but I guess so.
Anyway, I am still interested in any ideas and possibilities.
Thanks, Drew

Drew,

I work in the phone industry here in Korea. The LG rep was correct and incorrect.

Your iPhone 4S will work with a Korean sim card (providing that it has the sim card slot, which I'm sure 4S's do).

I recently activated a 4S from Verizon, which is also CDMA, but this phone had a "dummy sim" as the guy called it. Once the Korean sim card was in the phone, it did a couple of set up steps and was activated.

The main thing you need to do is have sprint unlock the phone before it can be activated here in Korea.

Depending on the area you're in is where you should go to have this done. I would suggest you go to KT to have your phone activated. Which may mean you have to cancel your LG plan, but you should have no problems transferring your number to KT.

If you're in Seoul, check out one of the KT Global stores, they have English speaking staff that can help you out.

I hope this helps, and feel free to PM me with anymore questions.

-Drew

Your mistake was calling LG... LG won't activate any foreign phones, but SK and KT will.

Second, make sure that the phone is unlocked by Sprint before you come to Korea. I've heard that Sprint makes it very difficult to unlock their phones, but your first post makes it seem like a non-issue.
