Is this generally considered a stupid thing to do?

I have relatives in Daegu that I could stay with. I want to teach in Pusan.

I'd consider it stupid to spend thousands of dollars to go somewhere with no guarantees of making any of it back, but that's just me. Plus the prevalence of recruiters and the ease of posting a resume on Dave's and other sites make it so that the only people who can't teach in Korea and get a job from another country are criminals and corpses.

It can work out quite well.

There are several advantages to being in Korea while looking for work. the main advantage is the ability to visit schools in person, meet the staff and see the accomodations when that is possible.

I would suggest you do some research before you leave however so you can target the parts of Busan you wish to work in.

A lot would depend on your visa class/

If you are coming on an F4 (maybe - you have relatives here).
If you are coming on an E2 (potentially need to make a trip home again at your expense for the consular interview).

side issue: there use to be good arguments for both sides.

- come without a job you lose the airfare.

- come with a job you increase the chances of getting a better school (but not necessarily a better deal).

.
