It seems to be becoming a popular trend now for "persons from the States" to walk into the North and get arrested.

Why did this guy do it?

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/03/23/american_detained_in_north_korea_is_30_year_old_boston_man/

Quote:
Aijalon Mahli Gomes, 30, was identified yesterday by state-run media in North Korea as the fourth US citizen detained for illegal entry in the past year. A trial date was not provided.

It is unclear why Gomes, who had been teaching English in South Korea for about two years, would have crossed into North Korea, the familys spokeswoman said.

Surely somebody in South Korea knows him, as he was a teacher here in the South for 2 years.

Was it just to become "famous" or did he have a real objective such as religious?

Americans will stop walking across the border when Koreans start making us Razz Razz Razz

By the sounds of things, gathering intelligence from the Norks must be really easy. Shocked

Time to send in Bill Richardson and offer some more free food aid for the starving North Korean army that is sworn to destroy the imperialist Americans that are giving them the aid.

So, if a person really wants to meet Bill Clinton, all they have to do is buy a ticket to China, make their way to northern China and casually walze across the border and get arrested by North Korean border guards?

Seems too much of a hassle to me.

Now that's what I call "taking initiative"!

Aijalon Mahli Gomes? What an odd name. Gomes is Spanish, but Aijalon Mahli? What the hell?

Aijalon Mahli Gomes receives 8 years hard labor and a $700,000 fine

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/07/AR2010040701024.html

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/terrorism-security/2010/0407/American-gets-8-years-labor-could-become-North-Korea-pawn-in-nuclear-talks

Will the North release him soon after they get something they want?

Americans walking into North Korea must realize they are actually helping the North to get things they want - because America will offer them something they want in order to release the American.

The guy was odd ball odd. He tried to exude this "Karma Guru" thing. Ineffective. And no, I don't plan any treks to the "Land of the Ill" any time soon. I understand the place ain't rockin'.

He probably heard that Nk Naengmyeong is more chewy and authentic so he wanted to try it. That's fair enough in my opinion.
