I'm finishing my contract in mid-November and I want to head to Thailand by myself for about 3 or 4 weeks. I'm just looking to chill out, read some books, relax, swim, and do yoga. I'd like to move around the country at my own whim, going from bangkok to the south and also possibly north.

however i'm really hoping to turn this into a kind of yoga holiday. i've looked on the internet some and found many places, but most of them are boutique-type luxury resorts that cater to rich western travelers. i'm hoping to find some sort of cheap bungalow with a fan and no TV, not a luxury resort.

i was thinking that the places with yoga classes in english will likely cater to foreign tourists and thus be more expensive. i don't mind if the class is conducted in thai (here in korea i don't understand everything, i just mimic the teacher).

TIA

does anyone have experience traveling thailand and doing yoga?
recommend any studios, islands, cities or areas?

I didn't do yoga, but I seen signs advertising it. You'll find plenty of rustic woven old style bungalows on stilts without TV outside of Bangkok in many smaller towns and rural areas that tourists visit. Lots of friendly accommodating locals rent places for $5 to $10 per night and serve a good plate of healthy food for less than $3. Lots of backpackers go chill in places like that just lounging around reading books finding their inner peace. Sounds like you want to head for the South islands such as the Samui Islands. Khao Sok national park area is pretty good too, but not beach.

You probably will do much better to just get on Thaivisa.com for reading and asking Thailand related questions. You can easily and instantly get an account and start posting.

The beach with the Sanctuary resort on Koh Pagnon has lots of western yoga teachers. Look up the sanctuary group on facebook. I also know a girl from Canada that is very good that teachers yoga in Thailand. Add her as a friend on facebook-her name is Lily Goncalves-she could tell you more.

well i got a copy of lonely planet for thailand and it lists a few yoga places... sanctuary is one of them and actually looks to be a real gem. its in a quiet cove on ko pha ngan. it looks like a really chill backpacker/hippie kind of place, and not your $1000 per night resort like i had found previously. just in case anyone uses the search feature and is looking for this info later, i'll list the places and website from lonely planet:

bangkok:
-absolute yoga - various studios around the city, including one near siam square
http://absoluteyogabangkok.com/
-yoga elements studio - near siam square, cheaper than absolute, looks a lil less yuppie
http://yogaelements.com/html/prices_promo.html

chiang mai:
-yoga sala
http://yogaelements.com/html/prices_promo.html
-yoga studio
http://yoga-chiangmai.com/

ko pha ngan:
-sanctuary
http://www.thesanctuarythailand.com/
-ananda
http://www.thesanctuarythailand.com/
-agama
http://www.agamayoga.com/

ko samui:
-absolute sanctuary - a branch of the place in bangkok
www.absoluteyogasamui.com

ko tao:
-shambhala
near blue wind resort, no website, email [email protected]

Thanks for the link, that looks like it would be an interesting trip. I'm thinking about doing a trip to Thailand and that would be a fun way to spend it. To spend some time doing yoga and then getting some sightseeing in afterward -it sounds perfect.

I did a trip to Baja Mexico, and did a yoga teacher training course a couple of years ago. I really liked the environment and the course was pretty good too. I had a fun time on the Baja peninsula while I was there.
