So a month into my new gig at a public middle school for boys, the principle has asked me to teach 2 community classes a week for mothers.

The age group is between 30-55, some mothers have low English ability and some are very well educated and can hold a decent conversation. Class size is 12-14 and each lesson was scheduled for 45 mins, although they regularly run over to 1 hour. I've never taught adults before but this class is rapidly becoming my favorite.

Do any other teachers on here teach community classes, and if so what were your experiences? What worked / didn't work and what materials / textbooks would you recommend?

I teach community classes and they include adults, mainly retired homemakers and stay-at-home moms. The classes are divided into beginners and high-intermediate to advanced. "Side By Side" is a pretty good book with lots of exercises. "Contemporary English" is okay, but geared more towards immigrants learning English in N. America. I'm researching right now, too, for books to use in the Fall.
