Not sure what forum to put this in, as it doesn't really relate to Korea but a little too serious for OT, hope it's ok. Anyway, this hit the news in Japan this afternoon and as someone who has worked in both Korea and Japan (and greatly enjoys both countries) I'm interested to see what the Japanese reaction is going to be for this. Compare and contrast to Korea's reaction to CPN.
On one hand there has been little hostility towards foreign teachers in Japan that I've come across compared to Korea. Probably due to that the average Japanese worker earns a lot more than the average FT and there is far less pressure on Japanese to learn English, which I think leads to less resentment.
On the other hand, the crime the guy has been accused of is as about as emotive as you can get and with Japan's economy being so sluggish, there's always a chance a lot of unemployed recent graduates might be a bit miffed at westerners walking into teaching jobs simply due to their country of origin and a liberal arts degree...they could see this as their chance to vent.
Anyway, will be interesting to see the media reaction... |

what's with getting defensive so easily CentralCali?
And OP, I don't know nearly enough about to Japan to comment, but it generally seems more restrained than Korea when it comes to this kind of thing. |

twas no swipe, just pointing out most entry level jobs in ESL are LA grads, like any profession some are sucessful, some aren't....
Don't take it to heart, I worked out ages ago success in the workplace is far more down to personality and social skills than what degree one has...(I myself have a lowly LA degree but have done ok!) anyway back to the topic in hand! |

Nothing to do with CPN, as he was never accused of any crime in Korea. This American used his teaching career to lure children to his home and was his classroom to molest young children. CPN was convicted of have sex with minors that were not his students. Anyway, there are too many perverts in ESL in Asia. |

I think it was the (American or Canadian) dude that taught in Korea but was caught as a pedophile in Thailand. He's one reason there are now more steps to take to get an e-2. |

Korea had a foreign sex offender. And now Japan had one, too? Wow, TWO on the SAME continent! What is this world coming to?

An update...
http://www.japantoday.com/category/kuchikomi/view/sleazy-sensei-avoided-suspicion-for-years
Sleazy English sensei avoided suspicion for years
Daijobu desu. Its okayIm her English teacher.
Whenever curious locals asked why a young female was in the front passenger seat, that was the mans standard reply.
He would tell people he was giving English lessons at his home, and they took it for granted thats what he was doing, recalls a local housewife, from an encounter seven years earlier...
Although the suspect was elderly, Akiko Kamei, who heads a national network against school sexual harassment, points out that the predisposition toward pedophilia remains ingrained.
Among people whose occupations that put them in daily contact with children, a portion may take such jobs for reasons that approach sexual interest, Kamei warns. I suppose there are people who think once a person becomes a sensei, he warrants the unconditional trust of the children under his care. |
