Do any Korean male teachers have affairs with students at your high schools? I'm beginning to wonder if this is more commonplace than back home.
I'm talking with the head of our English department at lunch the other day, and she tells me that one of the Korean teachers (I think he's still there -- not sure, because there are so many teachers) married one of the girls from the school. I guess it happened within a year after she graduated from our school. I was surprised, and hinted that I thought it was weird. She then teases me about and tells me to "watch out" for the crazy high school girls.
She's not kidding -- I have this one class where a girl shouts, "I LOVE YOU!" every time I just walk out of the classroom door. This, of course, is greated by deafining laughter from the entire class. I have always ignored it, but today I snuck a peak inside to try to figure out who the heck it is. Bad move -- laughter grew. I also have girls buying me cookies/candy left and right, as well as snapping digital photos with shaking hands. My western male co-worker caught one of the girls snapping hidden photos of his butt with her phone when he turned around -- hilarious.
Then today, I'm talking with some of the foreign teachers, and apparently there was another situation with a korean male teacher and a student last year. I didn't get full details, but sounds like some sort of affair -- not sure what happened to the teacher or who it was.
When I was in high school, I remember rumors about a classmate of mine having a fling with the 30-ish gym coach. So I'm sure this stuff is probably as common or more common in Korea, given the rest of the culture.
Does this stuff happen at your korean school, too? Most of these girls are under 19, which makes it illegal, but the ones who aren't ... hmm... I have to wonder what a coworker or two might be up to..... especially after the girl graduates. I'd call that "fair game" for them, but the ones who are your students... naughty, naughty! Me? No thanks. I like my job. |

How about foreign university teachers and students, and foreign teachers and other Korean staff (professors and or staff). Was at another university, and one of the Korean female professors yells out in Korean at a staff dinner that she wants to get it to-gether with the native English teacher. Korean English professor asked me if I understood what she said, and I said yes.
Sometimes students say they love you, because they want a good grade. In fact I'm sure that's what it is most times. If it means something else, and it's said infront of other students then you have to figure out away to diffuse it. Otherwise everyone else is going to feel uncomfortable. |

I used to think a male Korean teacher was doing the nasty with some students when I first started working where I do. Seems like it is just natural for some teachers to be a little more friendly and touchy than others.
I often wondered the same thing: but at my school, no teacher has married a student.
I don't really think it is wierd, I am sure if I wasn't married, I might have some offers from some of the girls who have graduated.
Still I gotta wonder...how many teachers bang their high school students here?
And is it like back home...the gym teachers there all got BAD reps cause of stuff like that! |

I used to naturally never touch a girl in class, but now I realized they all really get a kick out of it if a girl is sleeping and I grab her hair braid and shake back and forth to wake her up. My korean coworker often jokingly punishes the girls for doing something wrong by grabbing their head putting one hand on their forehead and one on the back of their head, and squeezing like smashing an orange. He doesn't do it hard -- just as a joking way of punishing them. The girls seem to get a laugh out of it. |

Koreans are more physical than Westerners, and more 'silly' too, if I can use that word in a positive way. Trust me, it isn't flirting when you see your students acting 'cute' or 'silly', it's just their culture. As for inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, no way. For one thing, it's not concealable in the hyper-social school setting, for another it's way too huge of a taboo, and very illegal. I'm not surprised if sometimes some years after graduation a teacher and old student meet up and so on, but i'd expect that's extremely rare. There was a TV series called 'Romance' that was on the air a few years ago in Korea about a female teacher and a boy student. If you watch the first 5 or 6 episodes, which concern this topic, you'll see how even in this show an inappropriate teacher-student relationship is inconceivable. |

Had a (Japanese) friend in Japan who used to be high school teacher, he married a student 1 month after she graduated But he didn't continue to teach at that school and they moved away to the other side of Japan. They had a very happy marriage for almost 20 years, sadly he passed away last year. |

Funny is I heard it is more common in Japan...not sure why.
I personally wouldn't look down on someone who married a student unless the age gap was just horrendous. But a guy in his 20s or early 30s marrying a former student...who am I to judge that? |

I also got that impression... Japanese high school girls tend to be a bit more 'mature' than Korean ones maybe...
My friend was double his wife's age when they got married (18/36)... I never dared asking if it was a big scandal at the time and if that's why they moved so far away right after. |

There is a popular Video out about a Korean Co Ed highschool and all the
shenanigans that could go on in a small town setting. It's kind of explicit in places, but one of the minor plots is about a student having a crush on his beautiful highschool teacher. Poor guy is living next to to the apatment the teacher is living in, and makes half hearted advances to-wards her. He has a few emotional problems, and the teacher develops feelings for him. It goes on and on, and they eventually get it to-gether. The movie was recomended to me by some Korean friends, and I thought it was pretty good. It's a red coloured video, and the cover has some starlets face who is now quite popular. .

Did any of you see that Korean movie that came out last summer that goes under the English name, "A good lawyers wife." It stars Moon So Ri.
It's K-porno-material, let me tell ya!
I watched it with a few Korean girls, and it freaked them out. |

I thought this movie was a little slow. Not as good as I expected.
Yje movie with Om Joeng Hwa in it where she has an affair because she is bored(name escapes me??) is a much better example of this type of movie. Check it out. |

I was always surprised by the number of teachers in my high school in Canada that married or had affairs with their female high school students.
Maybe in Japan/Korea/parts o asia there's not so much of a freak out about a student marrying a teacher because of the built in cultural respect. By way of example, few people would poo poo a 36 year old doctor marrying his 18 year old receptionist. Most would think "whoa... good catch, girl!" |
