I'm extending my E-2 for the first time this month. My current contract expires on April 5th.
My co-teacher made me an appointment at Suwon immigration but told me there was no availability until March 30th (one week before contract expiration.)
My questions are:
How easy is the extension process?
I am concerned about the scenario in which something goes wrong ("Oh you're missing this document.") I would prefer to have a few weeks of time but maybe I'm worrying for no reason.
Help put my mind at ease. |

If you are worried, just see if you can leave school early, say around 3.30 and go to the immi office. I understand that, once you're in the door, they have to see every person before they finish(feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
I had massive issues when I went at the beginning of the month. Here is my story.

My passport and ARC arrived yesterday. They haven't seen my CRC yet, but the immi guy I was dealing with was still maintaining it was an issue up until Monday. Go figure.
You probably won't have any problems. But, you are taking a gamble (albeit,a small one) of getting into problems. |

I have never extended, bit I have transferred my visa to a new school. It was relatively effortless. I imagine in your situation it would be even easier. All you need is a 1 day visit and it's a done deal. Enjoy your next year. |

Well there was a slight problem. My contract had the school's stamp on it rather than the GEPIK stamp.
My co-teacher had to fax in a copy of my old contract to show that I was currently employed by GEPIK.
Anyway, they have my passport, ARC, and 60,000 won so everything seems to be in order.
The concept of mailing my passport back to is still strange to me but whatever. Hoping for the best. |

Strange that they kept it... usually they take the paperwork, make the note on the back of your ARC and give you back your ARC and passport.
IF they kept it, it will be returned by a delivery service (not K-post).

I could be wrong, but extending a visa I don't think would require even updating an ARC card unless your apartment address or school address changed.
The 60,000 fee you paid indicates you got a multiple entry visa. I had the same thing happen to me when I applied for a multiple entry visa. They took both. Second time around, I just walked in with the multiple entry visa still valid (I didn't start the job with it) and they were able to transfer to a new school and update on the spot.
So, it appears you have to give up your passport and ARC card to get a multiple entry visa.
Doesn't seem out of the ordinary so far. You paid and applied for it before any expiration. |
