Hi there -

some of you might recall several weeks ago when I was in a panic over a terrible virus attack on my hard drive - well after some effort, I did manage to get a start up cd from MSI and my little winbook is plugging away again, I'm happy to say.

unfortunately, after much searching, hair pulling and gasps of horror - it seems I have actually lost some video footage I uploaded to the desktop of my winbook in the crush of returning stateside and needing to empty the san disk I use in my video cam.

the footage was of interviews I took with my friends in K upon leaving, and some of it was of on-road travels of my return stateside - I landed in Texas and proceed to travel cross-country. fortunately I have the footage after about halfway here to California - but that earlier stuff may be lost forever,

unless

the brilliant minds on here Smile have found a software somewhere, that can actually recover files after one has stripped one's hard drive - that is, reformatted it - is that even possible??

any good news at all?

if not, so be it, sigh.... but thought it was worth a shot to try...

usually reformatted HDDs are not recoverable

reason being is that they mix up the information that was on there, and lay over it a line of zeros (0) to make sure the data is "gone". If you had just deleted it, you could restore some stuff with software

You have to take the drive to a specialist- which could run into the high hundreds $$$ Shocked

one day I accidentally formatted a hard drive that had a lot of priceless files on it. (digital family vacation photos, important contact info etc.)

with recover my files there is an option for formatted drives and I ran it and it took a few hours but everything was recovered

I've used that Recover my files program in the past. It's a hit or miss. I got pics that I've lost after forgetting to back them up. Sometimes after the format it's corrupted. I'd say it's a good program overall compared to what I've used in the past to recover files. Bigger the files, harder it'll be to recover IMO
