Hi--

My husband will be teaching in Korea for 3 years as a prof of political science starting this Fall. I will have a visa to come with but I am not quite sure if it will be a tourist or a work visa.

Also, I am French but could easily pass for an American. I have been living in the states for 12 years and have "0" French accent.

Question #1: I only have a 2 year degree but I am thinking of getting a TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate. Would this be enough to teach English in Korea? (Daegu Area)

Question #2: What visa is required to teach English?

Question #3: Is there a high demand for English teachers in Daegu? I would hate to spend $1,000 for the certification if there was no need for teachers.

Thank you in advance,
-Edwige

1) You MAY be able to get an "internship" position at a public school BUT unless the majority of your education was in America you wouldn't qualify as an English teacher.

You need to have done your middle school, high school and university in one of the qualified "7" English speaking countries AND have a bachelors degree AND be a passport holder of one of the approved "7" countries. IF you hold a French passport it won't be possible.

2) you would need an E2 visa to be a teacher of a foreign language in Korea.

3) There is a high demand for English teachers all over Korea (including Daegu).

4) If you husband is here as a teacher (E1/E2) you would initially have an F3 (dependent family) visa. You may be able to find "work" unofficially although it would be a violation of your status of sojourn.

That's not true. E1s and E7s can both be used for English. People working at English villages often get E7s and I know they've hired plenty of people who aren't from the big 7. Last year Paju had a girl from Romania working there.

You just need a three year BA to teach in Korea. You don't need the full honours degree that would require a minor, and at least a 70% average in your Major.

Also you don't need a high GPA. Just a piece of paper sying you finished a degree from a real University.

I didn't say English teacher, I said, "E2 visa to be a teacher of a foreign language..." That is what an E2 visa is -TEACHER OF a FOREIGN LANGUAGE. http://www.immigration.go.kr/

She is not going to get either an E1 (visiting professor) or E7 (specialist) with a 2 year diploma and no experience.

She is not going to get an E2 for English when she has a French passport.

I may simplify within the context of the post I am answering, but for all intents and purposes, within said context the information will be correct and accurate.

ummmm .... she said 2 year NOT bachelor degree.
she said French (not holding a passport from an approved English speaking country (one of the 7).

The only visa she can get with what she outlined in the OP is an F3.

or if she is interested in studying Korean she can get the student visa (after 6 months) and work part time or even as a private lesson tutor legally which bizarrely is ok to do on a students visa.

mon ami,

Alliance Francais has schools in Korea - why not check with them and see about teaching French? I'm not sure they have one in Daegu but they might be of some help to you anyway.

Bon chance!

Problem being that, with the EXCEPTION of the TaLK & Internship programs at public schools (English), the requirement for an E2 (French teacher) is a BACHELORS Degree or E7 (Teachers certification from her home country).

Lots of "unauthorized" work available but LEGALLY there is nothing she can do except be a housewife with an F3.

With EPIK you can teach without a 3 year degree but will be paid 1.8mil. To get an e2 visa your degree must not be from a french university in quebec. The immi dep has a list of disallowed schools as your uni must be in English.

DeLaRed, would you recommend a TESOL/TESL/TEFL Certificate to do private tutoring since I only have a 2 year degree from a French institution?

Also, what type of part-time work would I be allowed to have?

I am definitely interested in studying Korean.

Thank you in advance!

If you hold an American passport and a 2 year diploma (from an English university/college) you can qualify for work as an intern or in the TaLK program in the public schools.

Better than illegal work or part-time tutor on a student visa.
