I have read about ATEK being 'discredited' and was wondering what happened. If we are not able to talk about it on the forum then please PM me. |

They have certainly had an interesting first year. As they start their second year, it's kind of a rebirth, or ATEK 2.0 as I've heard it called. They are currently voting on two options to update / replace their current by-laws.
They recently presented at the KETOSEL conference, and from what I hear the response was good.
Their focus is on membership now. If you would like to join as an Associate or as a General member, go to http://atek.or.kr/
You can see the progress on the by-law vote which is open for another two and a half weeks here, http://atek.or.kr/index.php?option=com_rsform&formId=20&Itemid=99999 |

I wonder how they're doing with some of these people who have posted new, current tales of woe here on this very forum. Maybe they don't think it's a good idea to reach out to someone who has a real problem, and try to solve that problem within their framework. Maybe it would give them too much credibility. |

I had the misfortune of running into one of their Sunday "meetings" - held at a bar, of course. I think if I had some work issues I'd have better luck asking a different group of bar flies for advice. |

I met one of their membership officers, and I'm not sure I've ever met a more obnoxious jerk in my life. |

Going through the motions to collect their salaries. They (the ATEK leadership) never even bother to bring up pension or health insurance or contract issues or visa portability issues for those of us who actually teach in Korea. Real issues for real teachers are beneath them. What a lost opportunity. |

Do they ever do anything constructive?
When politicians say negative things about English teachers does ATEK contact the newspaper and give a rebuttal?
Do they organize demonstrations?
What do they do to help improve the image of English teachers? |

Kind of hard to organize demonstrations with their target membership since such political activity would probably violate the status of sojourn for a good deal of said target membership. |

You didn't know that the leadership gets salaries? Maybe it's time for YOU to do some research. |

So who is paying this salary, the tooth fairy? There are less than 200 general members in the organization and they don't pay any membership fees.
So please do tell, by what economic miracle are they creating money for this alleged salary. You are a joke. |

I'm on an e2 and i have no problem with them trying to make things a little easier.
But really the only issue I have is with the resubmitting of documents. Sure Having my own visa would be nice, but it's not going to happen. What really annoys me is that I have to provide new transcripts, show diploma and new CRC each time. i'm on my 4th E2 for gods sake. I want to be able to go in, show my passport and contract. My degree hasn't changed, my transcripts haven't changed, I have been back to NZ for a total of 2 weeks in 4 years.

Hold on Mr. T-J. In the ATEK election thread a while back (in which a grand total of 42 people voted) they claimed that they had 800 members. Now it's pared back by 75%? |

No, the 800 number was and is the number of Associate (non-voting)members. They say it is close to 1000 now. An Associate member can be anyone, anywhere and only requires signing up via the web site.
The 200 number refers to the General membership (voting members). General membership requires proof of teaching status and residency in Korea. The subject of General membership criteria and verification is one of the reasons for the revisions to the by-laws that are currently being voted on.
Hope that clears it up. |
