It was big news a couple years ago when famed Korean actress Choi Jin Sil hung herself.

Now her little brother, who was taking care of her children, has committed suicide. He hung himself with electric cables on his house's rooftop.

I feel really bad for the children. Choi Jin Sil killing herself was tragic. her brother doing the same was plain cowardly and stupid.

Why the difference (I ask out of ignorance)?

Westerners are inclined to view suicide as 'cowardice" and hold no sympathy for the individual.
Thats a bit harsh I think. None of us know the full reasons behind an individuals choice. Those who view suicide as madness are typically people with few worries in life it seems. But how would you feel if saddled with vast inescapable debts ...emotional hurt from abuse...or a serious illness?

however I do think it is selfish- when the person has children to look after. Those kids will grow up with a sense of having been deserted. tragic.

I'm aware of that, but I was curious why the brother's suicide should be viewed as cowardice while the sister's should not.

Or, a less mean-spirited appraisal, it was simply a mental-health issue just like his elder sister's suicide.

I actually viewed her suicide as a form of protest. Not only was she abused with impunity by her K-man husband, she was also victimised for it. Her sponsors withdrew because she had allowed her reputation to be damaged (ie she had bruises inflicted by hubby)- and then she was sued for millions for something out of her control.

There have been a procession of famous Korean women to commit suicide - most of them because they were trapped in a chauvinist, sexist society that denies them rights because they were female.

the younger brother... Presumably he has inherited the massive debts?

As nautilus mentioned, I think she was in an abusive relationship, had other issues. The brother? Who knows.

The Plague of Celebrity Suicides continues.

A century and a half ago, I wonder what the suicide rate was. I sure can't imagine Yangban (the rich classes in Korea in those days) killing themselves at the rate the rich-and-famous in this country today do. Maybe they did, though, IDK.

selfish and stupid as well as cowardly.

what the hell is gonna happen to those children?

i have had two korean friends who have spoken of wanting to commit suicide and one has a young son the other two teenage sons, and when i bring them up as objects of concern neither korean friend has anything to say, as if the children don't compute, are irrelevant to their intentions.

*beep* pisses me off.

self-indulgent self-pity! i want to tell them to grow up but both are over thirty years of age (and each has issues with their parents by the way, are OBSESSED with their perceived failures in life, citing *(beep* superficial things like money and parental approval - a cultural thing Confused

life goes on... people who knew him will go.. WHY WHY.. ohhh wow..
next week.. KIM YU NA arrives back in korea and everyone will focus their attention to her..
NO one cares! life goes on..

Im sure the mother will kill herself next... choi jinsils children will inherit all the money, but I think the mother will wait a couple years until the children turn of age to recieve the money.. or the bastard husband/father will control the money, dont think the mum wants that...

the kids will be seriously disturbed children anyway.. basket cases...

still dont understand why after the mums death the brother and mum didnt move to canada or australia and start a new life...
or even better.. why choi jin sil didnt just take her 30 million dollars and move away from Korea and leave it all behind...

you only live once.. stupid to just throw it away.. their are other choices to suicide! problem is.. people probably never told them how easy and wonderful it will be to just pack up and move...

Celebrities have weak minds. Thats why they kill themselves.

How many millionaire/billionaire businessmen kill themselves? Not too many....
