I remember reading somewhere that Kyobo Gwanghwamun is closing for renovations for a while, but I can't remember when it will be closed.
I'd look to go there the next time I'm in Seoul, so does anyone know when it's going to be closed?
Thanks |

Any particular reason you're concerned with that particular branch? Just curious as there are many of them all over Seoul. |

I was under the impression that that branch had the best selection of English books in Seoul. I know there's a Bandi & Luni's near there, but it's selection is not as good. |

I see. Can't say I've been to Kyobo in Gwanghwamun, but I'd recommend checking What The Book in Itaewon. |

I was looking for some English books last week and it is closed until August.
From what I know it is the largest English bookstore in Korea. So what is the second largest?
I just want to look around and maybe pick up ESL stuff and something cool to read. |

If you need a bookstore downtown, there are two others. Bandi and Luni's as well as Youngpoong Bookstore; both have entrances directly from Jonggak Station.
Their English book sections aren't as big as Kyobo's, but they're not bad. |

There's also the Kyobo in Gangnam. Or is it closing for renovations as well? |

Does anyone know what happened to the Kim and Johnson bookstore that was in Gang Nam? Did it relocate, if so where? |

While they had a big english book section it was more of the same:
1 - Text books
2 - Self-help books
3 - movie books
4- a few bestsellers
5 - some token fiction (a couple popular ones and a small section of sci-fi, I think mostly star wars books, I hadn't been there in awhile) |

The staff at Gwanghwamun told me that the Gangnam branch was open. |

The Kyobo book selection was a lot of classic 19th Century lit and trendy self help/Gladwell/CHINA THREAT livre du jour kind of stuff, with a bunch of "Hey Korea's Just Swell" books on the side. Whatthebook is a better bet as they'll order whatever you want for you.
The one in Gagnam had a much better selection of non Korean foreign language study, mainly Japanese and Mandarin. |

In English, I found a Tuttle book on Japanese but it was about 88k. Too rich for my blood. |

I don't know why people plug Whatthebook so much.
I've been there: the prices aren't that good, and the buy back on used books is really not that great considering the price one pays to buy used books there.
Also, the guy who owns it/runs it has shown what sort of character he is on past posts on this forum, and others, particularly with a former member of this board.
Don't blindly go buy from the local foreigner selling books just because they are a foreigner. |

Can you elaborate on that or post some links to the threads you mentioned?
I'm just curious. |
