|
|
Hi, just wondering what living and teaching would be like in Jeju...been there for a weekend visit and i liked it very much...
Anyone currently living in Jeju and teaching? Are the people much different from mainland Korea?
I haven't really seen many postings for Jeju, so wondering if teaching there is not as popular as in the rest of Korea.
Does it seem like you're on vacation all year round? Jeju, seems to me like a wonderful escape place...
If you are currently there, or have lived there please share your thoughts...thanks! |

Everyone knows teaching anywhere except Seoul is rubbish.
Haven't you heard of Cohiba's Rule? |

I'm curious too. How big is the language difference from the big city? |

Summer on jeju-do is like being on paradise. Seogwipo beaches are fantastic, but so are all the other beaches surrounding old Jeju and new Jeju. My favourite beach is on Udo (a smaller island about 30 minutes from Jeju). It's like a Caribbean beach. Rent a scooter to get around Udo. The Jeju dialect is different from Seoul and Busan - as I have been told by native Koreans. Still, it wouldn't make a difference to me, because I don't understand Korean anyways. Be prepared to pay a small fortune, though, if you find yourself missing mainland Korea and really need to get off the island! |

There are no beaches on Udo that remotely resemble the Caribbean. The beaches on Jeju are decent for Korea, but nothing I haven't see on other islands in Korea. It doesn't even come close to some Thai, Philippino or Mediterranean beaches. |

Say what?!
Like the Caribbean? You be smoking too much of that wacky tobacco from Jamaica man!
No way does it even remotely compare to the Caribbean. Nor to Hawaii.
Jeju is great in the summer if you are from the korean mainland and have no funds to go elsehwere.
Yep...expensive...but hey....make offers or tell the merchant good bye to your money and go elsewhere.
Jeju is relaxing, no bali bali like seoul...but of course..less people. |

Have you been to Seoul?
It makes Toronto look like Hamilton.
I'm from Toronto, Seoul destroys it in every measurable way. The shopping, the nightlife, the art, the culture, the sights, the transportation, the sheer convenience of it all. I don't know what else is there to compare, but I'm sure if you can think of a category by which to compare two cities that isn't a negative thing, Seoul would win. |

Yeah, yeah...hellofaniceguy is right. It's not LIKE the Caribbean per se, but it is better compared to the beaches surrounding mainland SK. Katsu, if you decide to go there, make sure the school has AC and administration is generous with its use. Jeju is hot and sticky in the summer. (Very windy in winter, according to other foreigners who have lived there.) There are foreigners, but they'll be teaching mostly in New Jeju City or Seogwipo. Also, be sure that you'll be comfortable on an island. Don't go there if you have itchy feet or feel claustrophobic, otherwise weekend trips to Seoul or Busan will eat into your transportation budget. I was there for the summer, but the hogwan owners and I had issues (their stingy use of AC being one of them) and i did have itchy feet. |

Jeju is a second year or later destination, to put it succinctly.
The lifers tend to go to Jeju, it's got the best foreigner community of them all, you WILL get to know everyone there. People tend to stay there for years once they finally land a job there. |

Paradise is definitely a stretch, but...
I've actually thought about Jeju before. It wasn't too bad when I visited and the thought of spending a year on a sub-tropical(ish) island doesn't sound so bad. However, I imagine you can't ship stuff very cheaply there, which makes it hard for people like me who've been in Seoul a few years and have some furniture and such that would need to get moved. |

Jeju's great, if you can handle being back in high school. Small foreigner community, and everyone knows everyone else's business. Go for the quiet life, not the social life. |
