| My family and I are interested in spending a few weeks around Christmas time next year someplace a little warmer than Seoul. I will have my wife, my son in high school, my daughter in college, and possibly her boyfriend. We would love to rent something by the week. Preferably something near a beach somewhere in Asia, but other than that, we are wide open. First off, any suggestions as to places? Second, any suggested web sites I can use to do a little exploring? Thanks. |

1st off... nobody in the tourist industry is going to give you a break for a week long rental during the Christmas peak season.
That said... there are LOTS of good places that are affordable.
Your biggest kick will the the airfare (again during a PEAK period).
Where to suggest.... would depend on how long you have and, other than a white sand beach, what do you want in terms of creature comforts and other activities.
South of end Thailand.
More islands that I can list in the Philippines.
Guam,
Taiwan,
Indonesia (again, more islands than I can list).
East coast of Vietnam
...
the list is endless... there are direct flights from Seoul for all of them. |

Sounds like some interesting beach choices!! It also sounds like no deals in the making at that time of year. I expected that. I guess I was looking at some condos or maybe even a small house just due to the number of people in my party.
Does the beach or country help determine the price? For example, would Vietnam be cheaper than Thailand, or does it just not matter during the peak season? As far as amenities, I can only say we prefer staying away from large crowds.
Any web sites to suggest, or should we narrow down our choices first?

Perhaps it would be better to define a budget and activities then we can find the best bang for your buck?
For example, a beachfront cottage on Alona beach, quad occupancy or two small cottages (twin beds) runs about 40-50k won per night and includes breakfast (a-la-carte).
A 2 bedroom apartelle (mini apartment) runs about the same but does not include food.
You can also do something like Plantation bay in Cebu. Full-on 5* service and surroundings at about 250k per day for 4 people.
You can get a small beach house in Phuuket for just a little more that Alona beach (strong Thai baht so bad exchange rate for tourists).
Taiwan won't be cheap but will be interesting and culturally different that anything you have experienced before.
Guam is just like Hawaii ... little bit of America in the tropics with prices to match.

Sounds interesting!  We are probably looking at spending maybe 700,000 to 800,000 won a week on accommodations. As far as activities....I see us laying out at the beach, maybe a little swimming, a little snorkeling. A place with some interesting local cuisine close by. I know my wife and daughter love to shop, but that is not a necessity. My son and I also love to golf, but also not a necessity. The beach, pool, and weather are more important. |

So you want: beach, shopping and golf and 1 million won per week for everything for a family of 4. should be do-able with change to spare.
Boracay - short on shopping but has the rest
Alona beach - short on good golf.
Palawan - again, short on good golf.
Clark or Subic in Luzon - has it all but there is a seedy side.
Bantayan - no golf and short on shopping but great beach, quiet getaway. spend a week and move on.
Cebu - has it all but not as cheap.
Phuket or Pattaya - has it all but there is the seedy side to consider.
Krabi is nice - no golf.
Phi-phi is nice - no golf
Taiwan - west side of the island but no English and not cheap.
Guam - America with a beach a breeze. |
