|
|
The Camarata Music Company (CMC) would like to announce auditions for our spring musical/operetta, The Pirates of Penzance. Auditions will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2010, and Monday May 3 (will schedule based on your schedules), and rehearsals will begin on the May 8-9 weekend. The first performance will be on June 5, 2010. The performance is for a summer camp for multi-cultural children, put on by Seoul National University of Education's Department for Multicultural Affairs (this is a great event and cause, and we are excited to do it with them.. There will be a second, and possibly a third performance scheduled on weekends in mid to late June, including a possible "music in the park" performance.
Along with stage performers, we are also looking for instrumentalists, as we would like to put a little "orchestra" together. We will also be looking for stagehands, and behind the scenes workers.
All roles are available. Singing and acting experience is recommended, but by no means is it a requirement. All are invited to audition.
Rehearsals will be mainly on weekends (only weekends for large group/chorus), and we may schedule some weektime stuff for scenes for leads (we will be flexible with schedules).
The audition: Please prepare one song to sing for us. It doesn't have to be from the show, but can be if you want. What we want to hear is something that shows off your ability. Should be lighthearted, as this whole show is lighthearted. We will have some script reading, to hear how well you are with dialogue. A pianist will be provided for the audition!
Please contact me at: 010-9806-8655 or [email protected] for an audition time. It should be a great time, and we are really excited!!!!

Breakdown of roles:
Mabel (Soprano) - Mabel is one of the daughter's of Major General Stanley. She is like a "movie star" in attitude, as she is the prettiest, and she knows it. She doesn't have much dialogue, but has a lot of singing. Her genuineness and sincerity are at the forefront of the show.
Frederic (Tenor) - Young, manly, genuine and innocent. He is funny because he is so sincerely trying to do the honorable thing. He is energetic & out-going & honest. Rather than being strictly an operatic tenor he must be highly musical like a pop singer. Quality of voice, diction & phrasing and timbre should be natural to the person playing Frederic. He needs to possess unself-conscious sex appeal after all, the daughters fall for him instantly and sigh over his beauty. He sings more than any other character in the show.
Pirate King (Bass-Baritone) - Needs to be athletic. He is a whole hearted romantic, a member of the peerage who has gone wrong. He is the King because it is his ship. He & his crew are rather like dogs who like to bark, but are ready to run away if things gets serious. His idea of rape is to carry off the daughters to the nearest priest and marry them on the spot! The Pirate Kings quote What is life without a touch of poetry in it? is delivered with great feeling and sincerity. He is funny precisely because he means it. He wants to be a pirate to wear his shirt open and to galavant around. He would never really hurt anyone, and cant understand why Frederic wants to leave their romantic life for respectability.
Major General Stanley (Baritone) - Mabels father. Like a male Queen Victoria in his sensibilities. He is respectability. A grand out-going music hall tradition works well. He must be vivid, with warmth & good humour (like Santa Claus) and be quirky but believable. Well spoken, terribly terribly upper class English accent.
Ruth (Alto) - Ruth is Frederics nanny who has raised him to be a proper gentleman. It is from her that he has learned to be polite, honorable and respectable. The feelings between Ruth & Frederic are deep almost mother & son. They care for each other profoundly. No doubt Ruth has no more in mind in marrying Frederic than to continue to care for him, and to hug him regularly. Although Ruth is 47, she will not be portrayed as a typical old lady. Ruth comes back in the second act with a lot of spunk as she has gone pirate. Therefore she requires a lot of energy to participate in the three trio songs in Act 2 and also in With Cat Like Tread. The actress needs to be capable of great energy of delivery and comic timing.
Samuel (Baritone) - The Pirate Kings right hand man. Can either be an older man who may have taught the King all he knows, or the Kings age, or an upcoming King to be. Has a little dialogue and some solo singing.
Sergeant (Bass) - Comic role leader of a band of scaredy cats who want to appear brave. He should have considered what was involved before he joined the police force. He also must have done something wrong in his career to get this posting, as the force under his command are is an unusual one! (See chorus of Police notes). Needs to be a good mover, preferably a good dancer (be able to look clumsy).
Edith, Kate, Isabel (Soprano, Mezzo) - Mabels sisters, each with a unique personality. Some solo singing. Alot of stage time. Sassy, vivid characters.
Chorus of daughters
Chorus of Pirates
Chorus of Police
The choruses are a huge part of the show, and have more stage time than many of the leads. In my opinion, they are the best roles of the whole show, and are a hoot!

I'm really tempted, but rehearsals would probably be an issue for me. I work every second Saturday, and sometimes in the evening. Could you post something about the planned rehearsal schedule? With only 1 month to prepare I guess that it would have to be pretty intensive (though I haven't been in a musical since high school!). |

Wow, that brings back memories. I did the lighting for a Young Americans production of PofP back in '82. It was a lot of fun. The fellow who played the pirate king is now doing well in Hollywood (I got back in touch with him not long ago on Facebook).
Good luck with it! If I lived in the Seoul area, I would be tempted to join. |

rehearsals for large group will only be on the weekends. For leads (scenes with only a couple people, we will try to work out something also during the week if we can. If not, we will do a weekend rehearsal with leads also.
We are quite flexible with people's schedules, as long as they can devote to the show (as there is only one month to prepare).
The June 5 show with SNUE very well may be a slightly condensed version of the show.
Best,
