Hello all ~

I thought I had pretty fast internet (I had just assumed, ha) in my apartment until I tried to stream a video the other day -- one of those viral things, totally legal and whatnot. Just playing a video by visiting a website. It took about 30 minutes to load, and the thing was only about four minutes long in terms of playing time.

I asked the friend who sent me the link how long it took him to load it, and he said just a minute or two, max. He lives in NYC, USA -- I live in a city just outside of Seoul.

So I visited one of those "how fast is your internet?" sites and it told me that I get a download speed of about 1.5 mb/s and an upload speed of about 1 mb/s. Is this normal? I paid for a speed of about 50mb/s when I signed my contract with SK -- I know there should be some variation between what they promise and what I actually get due to a few outside factors, but really - this difference seems big.

What's your average internet speed? Am I really just getting what everyone else has, or is something wrong?

The internet speed you actually get will vary wildly depending on who you're connecting to and how fast they can upload, and where they are located in the world.

If you are trying to watch a video from a website whose server is in NYC, and that server can only upload at about 1.5mbps, then you're not going to get anywhere near the 50mbps or 100mbps maximum theoretical download speed that your Korean ISP advertises.

On the other hand, watching a video from a server in Korea should be lightning fast.

I never really thought those test your internet speed sites were very accurate

In daejeon I had a 50mb connection (I think)

I got 4 mb down / 1 mb up when downloading torrents with plenty of seeders
