Doing my EPIK application, trying to choose a province.
I like big cities, but don't NEED to be in Seoul or Busan. I don't NEED to be around a bunch of expats or have tons of western-style bars. I'm a photographer/filmmaker and plan on doing that in my free time, both in town and out of town. So I want to do a lot of hiking, a place by the coast is definitely a must. Doesn't need to be directly on the coast, but close.
I'm not sure. I was offered a position from another company in Seosan and I kind of like that area, it looks nice. Kind of smaller but not REALLY small, and nice surrounding landscape, peninsula and mountains.
SUGGESTIONS?! (appreciated, thank you!) |

Gyeongsangnamdo!
And not just because I've lived there for 7 years.
It's close to Busan (all towns and cities in the province have express buses to Busan), lots of great coastline and the weather in the southeastern province is the best, lots of Pacific ocean warm and fresh air systems. It's where the typhoons hit the hardest but only once a decade is it an issue (2003's Maemi was rough, but lasted only a few hours and get yourself in a big building and all's okay).
Geoje Island, Tongyeong, Namhae, Jinju, Changwon... all worth living in and around. Jiri national park is at the western side of the province and buses to Muju ski resort are quick and easy for winter fun. |

Kangwondo is also very popular for mountain climbers/hikers.

Thanks VanIslander!
Geoje certainly looks pretty great, as well as the rest of that area, I'm definitely going to add that as a preference!
You also brought up a good point I forgot to leave out, WEATHER! I am from the Midwest United States so I'm really kind of tired of winter. I know there's no where to really avoid it entirely in Korea, but wherever it is the most mild would be best. Makes sense that Gyeongsangnam-do area would be a bit milder. |
