Alright, I'm sort of freaking out, maybe overreacting.

I'm currently teaching in China and was fully ready to commit to a year teaching in Korea, but there's been a complication. I can't get an official criminal background check while I'm here in China, at least I don't think so. Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there ways around it?

Any help would make you a wizard in my book.

Depends on:
a) where you are from and
b) do you have family/friends at home who can help you (yes.no)?

A side issue MAY be that, if this is your first E2, you MAY be required to return to your HOME country for a consular interview before you can obtain your visa.

Good news is that the Korean school will pay (sometimes prepay) your airfare from your home country to Korea as well as your trip home at the end of the year.

Can a person in this situation do a visa run from Korea to Japan?

CBC - I am reading there is a new requirement it has to be signed - no more computer print outs accepted.

I think it depends on your country if a relative can get your documents for you (or a friend) - there must be a way - because businesses such as child day care order CBCs for their teachers - but I am not sure they require the hand signing. My state has the computer one and one that can be mailed. So for the mailed one it might take longer to reach you in China.

I would be interested in knowing the answer to this - it something I might do in the future too.

Since you are in China can you get a CBC from the American Embassy?

Can you do your interview at the Korean Consulates in China?

Hi,

Key question was asked before...have you worked in Korea before?

If not you will need an embassy interview as described. The Korean embassy in China might be happy to oblige but I think they want to do it in your home country.

You need to check your home country requirements regarding the CRC also. It will differ depending on where you are from.

Keep in mind that the documents for Korea will have to be cross checked and apostilled in your home country. Once you have the police check issued though that is the main hurdle since nowadays it seems you can pay by credit card for someone to do the apostille servicing back and forth and they will post it to you for extra money. Hope you have one.

Regarding the CRC talk to a major police station back home.

But first check with the Korean embassy website if you require a full police check with fingerprints etc. The fingerprints may complicate things, requiring an extra form from them.

If you only need the CRC hopefully they can email you a form, just issue it send it to your (international) address and you can use your credit card for payment. Once again this would be handy to have. Otherwise every little payment and postage will require a money order, cheque or something.

People will advise depending on your home country.
