| I am thinking of shipping an instrument from a relative at home. It's worth about $4000 and I don't want to pay VAT. I will want to insure it, of course. How do I deflect any problems from customs? |

I think that greatly depends on what the instrument is.
Are we talking a double bass?
Or a violin?
I would not trust anyone to ship something like that. I brought one instrument with me but had to leave all mine at home and bought more here. These things are fragile and the shippers don't really give a **** |

I had an Alto Sax delivered to me. It was sent via surface (boat). Took about 2 months to get to me. No problems with Customs. The Alto Sax looked obviously used. Not sure about your instrument. Its is prstine and spotless, you it may get held in customs.
To be on the safe side, i'd have the person sending it value it low. |
