I am thinking about applying for a job in Chungju (not cheongju), however I have read a few reviews about it being isolated. Does anyone live there or has any1 been there?

Are there things to do outside of teaching eg korean lessons, cooking lessons, cinema, etc.

Is there a nightlife? Karaoke bars etc.

Thank you!

My boyfriend and I have lived in Chungju for over a year now. It is really a great little city surrounded by mountains. There are two large supermarkets: E-Mart and Lotte Mart, a movie theater that plays new releases, some bowling alleys, a decent downtown, tons of noraebangs(karoake rooms). Transportation around the city and out to the rest of the country is convenient(it's about 1.5 hours from Cheongju and Seoul by bus). The area around the city is my favorite part, you can hop on a city bus and be out to Worakson National Park in like 20 minutes and Songhey Valley(in Woraksan) is a gorgeous place to get sun in the summer!

The foreigner scene is not as good as Cheongju and you can't even compare it to Seoul, but there are probably around 20-30 of us here(I could be undercalculating), and there are some bars that foreigners tend to go to more regularly.

As far as American food goes, there is a Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Dunkin Donuts, and Baskin Robbins....there used to be a McDonalds, but it closed down. There are tons of great Korean restaurants.

It may lack some of the pizazz and action of larger Korean cities, but it's real chill and you can always visit other cities on the weekend if you want.

Chungju Lake was a bit of a disappointment. Didn't see any shoreline to go down. Just essentially a filled in valley. Also avoid this swank, brown metallic shoebox looking restaurant on the road to the lake. Horrible service and coffee. Instant package cappuccino is not worth 7,000won.
