|
|
Saturday rate is 30,000원/hr. But, does this include non-teaching things? There's a sort of camp-thing that involves about three hours of teaching plus four hours of doing activities with children but not teaching.
Personally, I would consider this to be all billable at 30,000원/hr, but the POE has offered half. There's another rate in my contract of 6,000원/hr for non-teaching overtime.
Would you push for the 30,000/hr rate for all of the hours or accept 30,000 for the teaching hours and 6,000 for non-teaching hours? It's not exactly a difficult thing to do and could be fun, but I don't want to set any precedents where the POE gets away with paying much lower than they should be.
For those who don't want to read the whole thing:
Regardless of whether you are teaching or not, should you be paid full overtime rate (30,000원/hr in this case)? If the POE refuses, just say no to the extra work? |

From what I gather, anything outside your normal hours would be 30,000. So if you were supposed to do work at 4pm on a Thurs but it wasn't a class, you'd get 6,000, but anything in evenings and weekends will be that special rate. |

I probably wouldn't even do the 30,000 on Saturday gig. But that's just me.
You have to ask yourself, is this worth my time? Is 6,000 worth your time? Is 30,000 worth your time?
I'm not saying I'd "push" for it, but I'd definitely make sure I knew what they were planning on paying, and if I didn't feel it was worth my time, I would make sure they understood that in advance.
Personally, if I didn't want to do it, I'd offer to ask around and see if I could find any foreigners who would be interested in wasting their tim--, uh, I mean DOING ACTIVITES with the kids but NOT TEACHING for less than minimum wage back home. If they want a babysitter, they know where to get one. My impression is that they're trying to lowball you, just to see if they can get away with it.
Of course, this being the haggle-happy land of Korea, they're trying to get the best deal for them, and you're the only one who will be looking out for your best interest and your bottom line.
Be firm, be clear, and be polite, and you'll make the most headway in your negotiations. |

Agreed. Thanks for the advice.
I saw the budget. It's budgeted for about half the time it should take but multiplied by the 30,000/hr. I don't want to post further details but essentially they're budgeting the full overtime rate for half a day, even though it's a day of work.
I did this sort of activity day before and it was actually fun. I don't have to do any discipline or child control since their parents are there too. So it's pretty easy. Plus, it's optional so I can just not take it. But I do want to do the work; I just want to avoid setting a low-pay precedent.
So I'll mention what we should be getting paid and negotiate from there. If I don't like it I just won't work. I'll mention this to the other people who were offered the work as well since any one of us can set precedent on this. It'd be a totally different scenario if it was a camp or something mandatory; in that case I'd definitely request the full pay.
Thanks again! |

You pretty much answered your own question in your conclusary remarks.
I used to do three hours every second Saturday for 100K. Totally wasn't worth it. |

Yeah, I've answered a countless number of my own questions just by typing them into the Post A New Topic box |
