An Air Force study, released without much fanfare on Wednesday, suggests that tomorrows dogfighers might not have pilots in the cockpit. The Unmanned Aircraft System Flight Plan. which sketches out possible drone development through the year 2047, comes with plenty of qualifiers. But it envisions a radical future. In an acronym-dense 82 pages, the Air Force explains how ever-larger and more sophisticated flying robots could eventually replace every type of manned aircraft in its inventory everything from speedy, air-to-air fighters to lumbering bombers and tankers. |

If Flight Plan proves an accurate predictor, its not just manned fighters (maybe) headed for extinction, but (maybe) nuclear bombers, transports, tankers nearly all human-occupied military planes. |

Not particularly surprising. Why put the lives of your soldiers needlessly at risk? |

Because we can trust pilots to act on their own initiative.
What happens if communications is knocked out? What happens if aircraft are targetted with EMP? What happens if . . .
I'm comfortable with a drone fleet, but not an all-drone airforce. We'll need some pilots up there. |

Do you think that things like communications being knocked out would happen frequently enough to justify the constant risk of human lives?
I suppose I don't necessarily disagree with the idea that retaining some equipment and trained pilots on Air Force staff is a good thing; being prepared never hurts. I'd prefer our soldiers weren't put at risk any more than absolutely necessary, though. |

automation is here. In the next 100 years expect to see jobs vanish as computers and robots will replace us in sweeping numbers. No more pharmacists, dentists, doctors, teachers, pilots etc
In Canada last I remembered a bunch of places were phasing out clerks with self serve scanners. Hopefully I can be financiall established before my job is fully automated. I know a lot of you think your job wont be automated in the future but you are dead wrong. It's just a question of when it will happen. |

The most obvious danger here is that drones are machines and never disobey orders. Having fewer people in the command chain streamlines the command to fewer people with authority, who if chosen carefully are most likely to carry out questionable orders than normal soldiers might otherwise... |

Robots don't require water or food. When they become smart enough, they'll be able to drill underground and find the precious oil they require before developing their own intelligent and renewable forms of energy. Humans will be extinct in no time. Robots are cool. |

Just what I was thinking. I'm not worried about the automation as much as the human factor. |

Drones are definetely the future, The Pentagon is starting the '4th' defense unit the Cyber defense whatever. (Army, Navy, Air, Cyber) Being against drones and robots is idiotic. Stealth bombers couldn't fly without computers, missles would be useless. All these things can be hacked too. I understand the worry that having absolutely no humans in the sky can be dangerous. But no threatening nation has anything close to the JSF and probably won't ever beat it. They will just develope drones too, so why should the good guys be making more piloted planes when the JSF is just fine. (no mention of discontinuing it.) Putting most of the effort into drones is the best decision when you already have the best of everything else. The drones are great already, but serious improvement has to be made. I can see nano technology and mini drones being the future. Even have smart drones that don't need human guidance. Technology wins wars and not looking to the future when other countries obviously are with their hacking and cyber intelligence units is a recipe for disaster. |

I'd like to think that the Air Force isn't stupid enough to connect drone-control devices to the internet or other external networks. You can't hack something which has no external data-connection.
I also think the point that the idea that drones somehow remove human choice/human dissent from the equation is questionable. Without full-on artificial intelligence, someone is initiating and providing direction for those devices. That individual has the same capability to dissent as a pilot getting into an airplane would.
I do think providing an artificial intelligence full control of something like a drone bomber isn't a great idea. |

The more sophisticated the technology the higher the civilian casualties. |
