I have my visa number, and now need to do the interview. Can I just show up or do i need to make an appointment? Because it i need to make an appointment, I have not been able to come into contact with anyone in the consulate - its just an automated response. I was thinking of just showing up... if i can.

I just got my visa today from the LA consulate. When I called last week for an appointment they did not schedule one. They just told me to show up at 10 am today. Processing went very smooth, btw. If they are not busy you may be able to get your visa same day.
I would still call to make sure. The visa information number is (213) 385-9300 ext.45

Yep - same thing here.

btw, will i have to make two trips? Did you mail your documents to them or bring them with you today? Also, will they stamp my passport that day or do i have to come back again to pick up the stamped passport?

I didn't mail my docs. I just brought them with me. You may need to show up the next day but I think that depends more on the clerk or how busy they are. The clerk told me to come back the following day at 10am to pick up my passport but I just asked if it would be possible to get it the same day. She said to check back later in the day and it was finished.
Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference if you need an interview or not. I didn't, so it only took a few minutes to hand over the paperwork and pay the fee. Came back a few hours later and it was done. BTW, mine came as a single entry visa. You may want to ask about the multi-entry visa (probably will cost more).
Hope everything goes well.

Out of all the consulates I've dealt with, L.A. has been the best. If they're not busy, I'm pretty sure they can process everything in one day.
