Has anyone spent time in Vladivostok? We 're heading there in May, and NOT to catch the Trans-Siberian railway. We wanted to experience Russia: The Far East. For those who have been there:

- How safe was the city? Day/night?

- Did you stumble upon anything interesting to do off the beaten track? (not so much into the city's military heritage.)

- Nightlife. How did it measure up?

Thanks in advance for anyone who shares.

Sorry but I'm going to throw this back at you as I'm interested as well-

Are you getting there via plane or ferry? How much did it cost/how did you reserve your ticket?

Also - have you seen the Wikitravel page on Vladivostok?

We reserved tickets on Vladivostok Air. They were not cheap, considering the proximity of Vladivostok to Incheon! I believe we paid around 715 000w for each ticket. Hotel rooms are average - high priced in the city. We've made reservations at Amursky Bay for around $75/night.

I have been over the Wiki-Vladivostok page before, thanks. Actually I've done a tonne of research, but am finding that a lot of the information online is out-of-date. I'm looking to hear about any funky must-see cafes and bars or off the wall museums, etc that the guidebooks don't tell you about!

bbb0777 - good luck. i hope you make it there!

I've been to Vladivostok a couple of times. During the day, the city is just as safe as anywhere else. Personally, I didn't feel unsafe at night either, but I wasn't alone. It really isn't a cheap place, and if you want to enjoy nightlife, get ready to spend. Having said that, the nightlife is great. There are a lot of clubs/bars and even one place that was a casino on the first floor, a club on the 2nd and 3rd and a rippers on the 4th floor. Your cover charge depended on how much you wanted. There is enough to keep you interested within the city for a few days. Theo only western food chain there that I saw was Baskin Robbins, so it is cool to see a western place without our western stuff.
