I am just curious what your university's sick day policy is. I will preface this statement by saying that I am NOT complaining about my school's policy as we only teach classes 28 weeks/year and have loads of vacation time, but am only curious.
So, at our school you must make up every class that is missed due to being sick. You can essentially call in sick as many times as you need (obviously within reason) but then need to make up the missed classes before the end of the semester. It just seems a little strange to me that you can't miss even one class in a semester. The Korean professors seem to be able to all-out cancel their classes when they are sick or even to do other things like take the kids to the park for a picnic (in which case our classes are cancelled as well, so they can not only cancel their classes but also ours)...at any rate, I am not starting another why do the Korean professors get X and not the foreign professors as we clearly do not have the same jobs...I am just curious if some universities do allow the English professors to cancel 1 class a semester if they are sick.

It's a university that hires professors who make typos....I meant to say 28 weeks.
Let me edit that. |

Pretty much every university in Korea...as far as I know.
There are two 16-week semesters, and during each of those semesters 2 weeks are designated as exam weeks, one for midterms and one for finals.
So there are only 14 weeks of instruction per semester, with about a 2 month break in the summer and a 2.5 month break in the winter. |

Man, I want to be a professor in Korea, I could take over half of the school year off and they wouldn't be able to fire me for it. |

This isn't all that difficult of an end to achieve...there are so many clowns working at universities here it is crazy.
Teach for a year, get a CELTA (not trying to start another CELTA pro/con thread), and then you can start applying for uni jobs. Your first uni might be out in the sticks and not have the whole 5 months vacation, but then the next year you can apply again for slightly better schools and with a year of uni experience under your belt you should be able to find a decent job.
Granted...this is assuming that you can be presentable in an interview and at least BS your way through the basics of your teaching methodologies, and most importantly that you're willing to live in a small town. In general the universities in larger towns are harder to get into as the professors from the rural schools move into the cities after they have more experience. |
