It's the Earth Day 40th anniversary. It's more of an American thing as another Earth Day is in March, but I know Korea did the American Arbor Day thing for like 40 years until recently. This is a weekend, I'd love to be in the states for. Too bad it's not a small hop over the Pacific pond. |

Wow, I am dumber for having read this post, not to mention the hilarious thread title. Are you drunk? |

Well, at least the OP inserted the necessary apostrophe in "it's" in three instances.
To the OP: If you're really so passionate about saving the Earth that you create a thread about Earth Day on this site, then you would do at least two things differently than your post suggests. (1) You would NOT fly to another continent to celebrate Earth Day as you would be contributing to an increase in emitted greenhouse gases. (2) Your post would reflect more Earth Day initiative that it really does. Perhaps next year you could organize a group of ESL teachers to do something Earth Day related and productive (themed lesson or clean-up project). |

I already did something green, on St. Patricks Day I attended the free Guinness beer event. |

I take it you are not American and don't have a clue what I am referring to. It's true that flying to the other side the world hurts the Earth and it's silly to be flying on high octane petro to a, "Save the world Earth Day/hippy/liberals festival."
Really, we do have this Earth Day, as silly as it sounds, every Spring since 1970 which was concurrant with the formation of the EPA 3 weeks later. The American environment has improved significantly from these initiatives and education, but at the same time, these improvements may be an indirect result of outsourcing polluting industrial processes over to Asian countries. |

Got some stats to support your claim?
Renewable energies account for just 7% of energy in the United States. http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/solar.renewables/page/prelim_trends/rea_prereport.html
And, the United States is still the world's number one or number two polluter depending on which statistics you go with.
While the intentions behind Earth Day are good, the occasion is morphing into just another retail holiday targeting people to spend money on various "green" products. |

Amen. I've lost count of how many "Earth Day Savings" e-mails I've deleted this week. |

It was yesterday (Thursday) in Korea. They turned the lights off in government buildings for 10 minutes. Some companies participated too. |

That's cool, it was April 22nd, but Americans usually celebrate it during the day on the weekend. Right, it's becoming too commercialized and it's actually another activity damaging the environment. Seems like anything we humans do is polluting. It's not the first time I've heard America is the biggest polluter. We just have so much physical space that you rarely notice like you would in such compact living conditions Korea offers due to a lack of physical space. It's cramped, stinky, polluted, and downright a bit too close when it comes to people traffic so you do notice, smell, and are more effected by pollution here than back home.
I like BBC Earth, Power of the Planet, where Dr. Iain Stewart explains at the end of the last episode that saving the Earth is not what we should be concerned with, but it's us we should worry about as we operate on a different time span than the Earth. He says the Earth will heal over 1 million years once we are finished changing it's environment into a one that threatens our civilization while showing video of a crowded Asian city.
I would say Earth Day really is silly, but it's a fun and healthy to get together with people and have a social activity that doesn't include drinking and late night settings. |

Bull crap. Rising standards of living, made possible by industry and private firms, have had more of a positive affect on the "environment"(whatever that means), than a bunch of hippies sitting around smoking pot, and asking for a hand out from the productive sector of the economy, ever could. |

The Earth would show few signs of humans within less than a century. Look at abandoned cities eg. Chernobyl. Herds of deer graze there now. That part of the world had massive nuclear fall out, and it can still easily sustain life. Even if man becomes extinct, it will be damn near impossible to eradicate all life on the planet.
I don't know what anti-humanist hippies are worried about. If their prophecies are correct, we are rapidly heading towards their ideal utopia anyway. Luckily they are severely deluded and will be looked back upon as the death cult they are, within a few decades. |

Korea must have a very high rate of per capita SUV ownership.
It is also busy destorying its natural environments to put up parking lots.
Earth day won't mean anything here except a temporary window-dressing. |

they not only have it in america. they have it all over the world. europe and america as well as in asia.
e.g. this year aerosmith and lady gaga were supposed to have a few mins on stage in beijing, china.
and yes, they have it there. i think its either the second or third year they are holding earth day there.
so, as far as free shows of huge acts go, china woulda been a cheaper option. (that is, if yahoo news wasnt lying when they released the press release on the line up)
sadly tho, korea doesnt participate in it. but then again. look around. it doesnt necessarily look like koreans are much into the whole 'green wave and saving your environment' thing... |
