Hey all, newbie here working my way through the forums. Sorry this is probably a really common topic, but i've been looking in the archives of the forums and can't find a date of when i should apply to get a teaching position.
I read that most public schools do their hiring starting September and March, but my girlfriend and I were looking to start teaching possibly in December (our lease here doesn't end until November). I was wondering what anyone's input on the likelihood of finding a decent pair of jobs for a couple would be during this period or if we should move out earlier or later to come during the peak seasons, and how soon beforehand we should start talking to recruiters and applying for jobs.
Anyways, if any of you could throw me a link to a previous topic discussing this or anything like that it would be much appreciated. Thanks! |

Hi There,
I hear it is slowing down so apply as soon as possible. If it is the public school you may not be able to apply though without waiting for the intake period. But I recommend asking around.
Put in the application the starting date of your availability. Check they received the application. Since they may know other people are finishing at this time you could be lucky.
You need time yourself to prepare to come and to prepare your visa. So start talking as soon as possible and firstly decide what kind of school. The hours that suit you could determine this.
That will narrow it down.
Good luck, |

December is probably the WORST time to look for a public school position. The students are on vacation from late Dec to end of Feb.
If you want a hakwon position then it won't matter.
If you want a public school AND placement as a couple then you should have documents in hand in Dec/Jan and apply for the Feb intake in the PS programs. |

Thanks for the advice salgi and ttom. I didn't know about the long break in december - february, probably should be doing more research before i ask questions, but i'm already spending hours on here a day and want to be sure i get everything figured out on time.
I was hoping for a public school position, though if we were placed in a hakwon it'd probably be okay, right? I've been thinking about it and am definitely willing to work 60 hour weeks for the next 4 and a half months to save up enough money to finish paying my lease here and head out in September if i have to. We'll be graduating with bachelor's degrees in English in May; in your opinion would that be enough time to get all the documents in order for the PS's September 1st hiring date? Thanks again! |

Hi There,
It may be if you are lucky. What I would suggest is to get your transcipts (sealed etc) more then one, your degree and documents out of the way (apostilled etc) as soon as you have them and apply about then. Usually the entire package of application for PS would require all of your documents etc. Not much point applying before you have them, have them so you can get them verified.
You will want to get on it in May or June and keep in mind they will need you here a few days at leats before the starting date.
Have you looked into the details of starting at a PS on this board?
I am not sure but leave as much time as possible as different places/ recruiters require different things.
If you have not worked in Korea before you will require a consular /embassy in person or a by phone interview. |
