Gapyong is about an hour and 20 minutes form Seoul by train. There's a train station there and regular buses going all day and into the night, stopping at about 10 p.m.
It's a small community along a nice river. There is water skiing and a lot of cottages and hotels for tourists.
There is skiing in the winter as well.
It's only about 30 minutes by train to the city of Chuncheon in Gangwon-Province.
There are some corporate training centers there. I know Hanwha has one near Gapyong city.
It's cold there in the winter, but not quite as cold as the deep freeze you feel in Chuncheon.
If your housing is nice and you don't mind being off the beaten path, then you're OK.
If you want to take your laptop into Starbucks every night and be in a community mixed with foreigners and Koreans, then you need to get a job in Seoul.
I'd say Gapyong is a great place for an outdoorsman or outdoorswoman. Two nice spots are Nami-Seom, a little island with a walking tour course, nice trees and flowers and a movie museum. They also have bungee jumping nearby.
The other is Gangchon, a hiker's spot with lots of touristy restaurants and they have a scaled down race-car track.
Hope that helps.

You're also a stones throw away from a place called Kangcheong. It's a beautiful valley surrounded by rugged hills with a river flowing through it.
You can rent bicycles made for two it's a great date spot. It's full of Doc-Kalbi restaurants and short time love motels. Great place to take a lover for an afternoon/Evening.
If your placed in Gapyoung be aware it's a large county. The best spot is Gapyoung Up ( Meaning downtown Gapyoung) The POE has a teachers housing dormatory in Buk Myeong ( North Gapyoung) If you are housed there it will be quite tricky getting around unless you plan on buying a car/motorcycle. Public transit around Gapyoung ends early in the evening.
It's possible you might be housed somewhere that is not convinient for you to party late at night. On the positive side transportation in and out of Gapyoung Up is pretty good. That is only if you are placed in an apartment in downtown Gayoung. Also if you are placed in dormatory in the sticks there's a good change you will be living in the same building as your co-workers. |

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I'm not too worried about it being in the country, I actually plan on doing a lot of hiking. I keep more to myself than I going out and partying anyway. I did want to get in shape while I'm there though, is there any gym around there, or is it too rural? |

Did you end up going to Gapyeong? If so, how is it? I am thinking/planning on going there and just would like some insight from a person who has been/is there. |
