I've been searching for a teaching position in Korea. But most of the positions I've seen require a BA. I have an Associate's Degree. Do I still have a chance at finding a job? Would having a TEFL certificate help my chances too?
Thank you! |
You MAY be lucky (perhaps unlucky) enough to find an "internship" with EPIK or the TaLK program. (same job - lower pay)
Otherwise you need a BA/B.Sc. as a minimum for a work visa.

For the pay that those internships would give you I would think that you'd just be better off going to Vietnam where you can get a job with the degree you've got. |

Sorry, my question is if I can have a better chance at finding a job with a TOEFL certificate. I just don't want to waste my money for the class if it isn't worth it.
But I do know that I can legally have a teaching visa in Korea with an associate's degree. It was changed a couple of years ago due to the large demand for English speaking teachers. Resoruces: http://www.asia-pacific-connections.com/what's_required.html , http://www.teachsouthkorea.com/faq
Thanks for the EPIK and TALK advice. I'll try that. The pay isn't important (though the more the better). My girlfriend is Korean so I'm trying to stay there for as long a period of time as possible. |

BE AWARE: the ONLY (legal) positions you can get with an associate degree are the EPIK/TaLK internship positions. If anyone else tells you something else they are mistaken or outright lying.
WILL a TESOL/TEFL cert help? Yes, and it will also get you a 100k per month bump in pay. |

Can you send me your sources for that? In my post above the two websites list that it is legal. |

they ARE talking about the TALK program..... they just wont name it, and give you the name to google and find on your own.
Recruiters are sneaky like that... |

My source is the Korean immigration office and the Ministry of Justice office in Seoul, NOT some recruiter's website.
You can also cruise through the ministry's websites for further information.

or better yet, contact the Korean consulate that is responsible for your region - they are the ones who will ultimately give you your visa.
