I'm just wondering if anyone has been to Mongolia. What did you do, what did it cost you. Has anyone done one of those hire an old jeep and an interpreter type/do it yourself explorer jobs? Was it worth it?
How much did you budget? What would you reccomend doing/seeing?

I went into Mongolia from China on the Trans-Siberian rail.
It was extremely cheap, however while there I got sick. Didn't stay as long as hoped, however Ulanbataar is quite interesting:
I witnessed a man get sucker-punched
Almost robbed
Had a great time
I stayed at the Golden Gobi. Rooms there are really cheap and the staff are good. |

i went there on a trip organized by xanadu travel a few years ago. we spent some time in ulaanbaatar (the capital city) and from there went into the countryside in some cool, soviet vans to our camp site. we went camping in traditional gers, horseback riding, did some archery and hiking.
i forget how much it was now, but it wasn't bad at all, considering it was a tour. i definitely recommend getting out of the capital though, there didn't seem to be much to see there. |

I went a few years ago. It was the clearest sky I have ever seen, never saw stars like that.
There was a guesthouse that put together tours of 6 or 7 tourists at a time, with a driver, and a VW van. I saw some others going out with a jeep and driver and translator, but I would guess that would be at least $80 a day, probably more. Find a group once you are there and the price is dirt cheap. There is quite a few inconveniences there. When you find a place with hot showers, you may have to queue an hour or more; and one day breakfast was "hot water" (yurt camp owner was on the sauce a bit). But the sky and landscape are amazing. |

I was there last September. I love Mongolia (and Mongolians).
Best thing to do is to stay at a hostel. They always have tours going from the Gobi to North West Khovsgol lake. You go with other travellers, foreigners and friends you pick up at the hostel.
Another thing is to go online and search for travel sites, tour sites, or even Facebook. Find Mongolian people and talk. They are so friendly that most will agree to a coffee with you and even take you sightseeing. I did this and hooked up with no less than 9 gals in the space of the 2 weeks I was there. My travel guide was a cool 22 yr old girl and I not only did she stay with me for the three days out on the plains, she and her boss gave me a helluva discount on the tour. Another friend from online took me to the shows in Ulaan Bataar. Friendly people, great people all.
I plan to go there almost every year, no joke. |

Thank you, me and the GF can't wait. We found a place where we can hire an old Russian jeep for 10days with a driver. Should set us back about $1450 for everything(fuel, camping, park fees and driver) .
Can't wait to see the stars.
Was anybody able to find decent prices for flights?

Many agents will only offer you the Korean Air ticket, which is expensive.
There is also a Mongolian air (Air Mongolia?, not sure of the name). I bought a ticket on that airline from an agent in Itaewon. Wherever you buy, if they only offer you Korean Air, push for the Mongolian air ticket.
That flight had the biggest lunch I ever saw, it was like a double wide airplane meal. Fine service too. |

| Go directly to the MIAT website. Their best fares sometimes don't make it to Expedia et al. |
