For those of you that have previously applied to the University of Birmingham this question is for you.

I read that you need two reference letters and one must be from an academic professor. My question is how strict is the requirement that one of the reference letters be from a professor/teacher?

The issue I am facing is that it has been over five years since I graduated college. I am not in contact with any former professors nor do I think if I e-mailed them would they even remember me. (I am not sure if they are still teaching at my old university). It is also not possible for me to visit the campus to talk to any of them.

I have no problem getting a reference from former employer.

Have any of you had this problem or know some one who has been in a similar situation? I would like to know how you handled the problem.

I tried e-mailing the university but have not had a response yet. I plan on applying for the next April 2011 or Fall 2011 semester. I just started my search for good online MA programs and the University of Birmingham is my first choice as everything I have read has been positive.

Thanks in advance.
