What elementary school stuff do you use? Websites or files? I'm interested to know. I am really lazy as well as loaded up with overtime |

I'm going to address your thread title rather than your opening question OP: I can be lazy as hell on some days too. I use barryfun and a few other sites to fill in the gaps of my morning addled brain, but I always pay attention in class. This is what I see: When I make up my own stuff from scratch, the students love the lessons and are totally excited by and into them. When I use ready to use dittos and stuff, the response is positive, but nowhere near the reaction I get when I make up stuff.
It's not because I am SUPERTEACHER, but because no one knows my students as well as I do. I know what they like, their interests, their quirks, attention span, the works. I also know exactly the kind of difficulties they need to focus on. This is not to say that you've got to spend hours on end creating beautiful worksheets and detailed lesson plans. I don't. I can make up a word perfect paper for communicative Bingo that uses the target language as well as the funny language the students in class have a special attraction to, such as "you're crazy!" "Your finger is (a) banana!" Stuff I hear them say in the halls, in class, outside. I jot their words down on a piece of paper for future reference. They dig it big time and it's no longer a canned lesson, but one that motivates them and gets them speaking in English. This way of thinking and monitoring becomes a habit just like your morning cup of coffee, so you can still be lazy even while you're kicking some English ass. |

Gipkik gives some great advice.
Theres tons of good lesson ideas out there but unless you adapt & personalize them to your own students you end up having to explain too much side stuff & they lose interest. Or its too easy & they lose interest. No book or site knows your students like you do (or should do).
Bogglesworld & Barryfun get trotted out in all these discussion threads. Fine sites, no argument here. But if you just use their worksheets as is as easy fallbacks, chances are other teachers before you have too. Korean kids meet foreign teachers year in year out now. Same old recycled worksheets, the kids can smell a lazy disinterested teacher. |

If you make all your own worksheets and handouts, then you're not hardworking, you're just doing it wrong. There's a fine line between laziness and efficiency. |

I agree, but I don't think anyone here is talking about reinventing the wheel. |

The couple that runs www.eatyourkimchi.com post lots of lesson plans (complete with keynote/ppt and handouts). They have definitely saved me many a days. |

As long as you are "good" at being lazy, all will be well. You are working at it and that's to be commended.
I think it much better than printing and going through all the hassle and heat of the photocopier - I think it much easier to just give students an A4 and get them to make up the worksheets. Takes them a long time and you'll be able to just sit back and cruise on through the lesson as they make the content........ Can't get easier than that . Write some numbers on the board and then tell them to make a worksheet. They must be good at it - they've probably gotten hundreds of them.

I use those sites for flashcards and ideas. Back in the day when all I had was a phonics book and was told to go to it, the flashcard was my savior. You can make up zillions of flashcard games...but don't just use these sites. Use google images and your zany sense of humor. Print the words and pics separately and play matching games, then use those same images for tests and worksheets.
And the book that I'm stashing in my suitcase?
The ESL Teacher's Book of Lists...lots of ideas! |
