I am a big fan of horror movies but I have hard time finding ones that I really like. I'm not into torture/gore/rape or cheap scares from axe-wielding psychos unless it is part of a more elaborate plot. I have never seen the Saw movies and I don't plan on it. Any suggestions? These are some I like but I'm not sure if they all count as specifically "horror."
Psycho (the original)
The Omen (")
Alien
Aliens
The Ring
The Grudge
The Others
The Eye (original Chinese version)
The Village
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Skeleton Key
Pandorum
The Silence of the Lambs |

if you are going to discount a perfectly good horror series such as The Saw Movies then I doubt you are really that interested in decent horror films. While they started to diminish in quality the first 3 especially are excelent examples of horror where the torture has a point.
The fact that you think The Skeleton key is a good horror film also suggests to me that your definition of horror is not shared by others. I have yet to meet a person who thought that Skeleton key ( or two sisters for that matter) was a good film.
So yeah, try the saw films, not sure your reasons for not wanting to give them a shot, but as I said, if you are that quick to discount them, then you are not really looking for decent horrors at all. |

I'm a big zombie movie fan, so if you haven't seen them yet:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (the 1973 original is better, but the 2004 remake is still fun)

I don't want to watch them because I don't like watching torture. Plain and simple. I have heard the Saw movies are good and the torture has a point, but it still comes back to the fact that I don't want to watch torture. And you don't have to agree with me on my choice of movies. I didn't say any of the movies I listed are Oscar-worthy. I just named some movies that I enjoyed. As you didn't recommend any movies, other than the one series I said I'm not interested in, I'm not sure why you responded. |

So you didnt actually mean it when you said:

What do you define as torture? You've got some gruesome death scenes but very little in the way of "torture"
Imagine that though Death scenes in a horror!!!!!!
So watching aliens jump out of peoples chests........ is okay
watching a girl cut off her own body part to survive.......not okay?
I responded because again I question what you are even looking for. You are not technically looking for horror at all then, you are looking for suspense or science fiction that MAY contain certain horrific elements.
So again as I said, perhaps youd better redefine your query and get your posts straight so that you are not contracticting yourself in posts.
as it stands the Saw films are the best horrors put out in the last 10 years or so ( not that there have been that many)
So can I suggest some good horror movies? No I can't, you are not even looking for horrors |

I like horror movies, but I don't like the Saw franchise.....to me it is just gore porn (whether the torture has a point or not). I don't enjoy them and actually find the graphic deaths of the protagonists disturbing.....I watch movies to be entertained, not disturbed.
Your opinion is that the Saw films are the best horrors put out in the last 10 years or so. That is not everybody's opinion, and just because some people disagree with you does not mean that you should jump down their throat about it. Jeez you'd think the OP had insulted your mother or something, the way you are reacting. He asked for some movie recommendations, not a debate. I really hope you're not like this in real life Seoulio, you make an assertion, you vehemently disagree with people who have a contrary opinion, and you then end up being insulting.....this is the pattern I have observed in many a thread, not just this one. Recommend a film other than Saw or just butt out. I like horror movies and this could turn into a useful thread, but not if your need to force your viewpoint on all and sundry derails it before it even gets going. |

People actually consider Saw a GOOD horror movie? Astonishing. Personally I feel 'good' 'horror' and 'movie' don't tend to work together. On very rare occasions I might use the three together. Like 'This is not a good horror movie'
There are a few greats honestly. There's this intense Spanish film... Route 66? Route 72? I forget. Something about a road, anyway. That's all I can really think of that works as a good horror. The rest are either about trapping people in small dark places to be devoured one by one, or.. actually that's the only technique I've seen used. |

I second the zombie movie recommendation if you're into them - the original trio of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead is quality.
Also, there's a Korean movie - the Return - that I thought was quite good. It's not technically a horror, but the premise - being awake but paralysed during an operation - is scary. Judging by your taste, you might enjoy it.
My all time favourite is a French film called Switchblade Romance. Scared the *** out of me the first time I saw it. |

In the Mouth of Madness always scared the hell out of me. Lovecraft had some creepy stuff. |

The Exoricst, there is no substitute. All the little subliminal flashes of a demon during the movie adds to the horror and attack you psychologically. |

You should also check out Dead Snow (Nazi zombies) and Zombieland (Bill Murray as a zombie!) if you like zombie horror/comedies. |

Some good ones:
30 Days of night
The last house on the left
Drag me to hell
Let the right one in (Swedish)
I like horror films but I can't sit through the new genre of torture porn films like Hostel, Saw etc... either. |
