Cambodia: Ban on Marriages to South Korean Men
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: March 19, 2010
Cambodia has temporarily barred its citizens from marrying South Korean men, after two dozen women were sold into marriage by matchmakers, an official said Friday. Koy Kuong, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said the ban would remain in place while the government worked to ensure that South Korean men hoping to marry Cambodian women were able to first prove that they were single and did not have a prison record. We want to make sure that their marriages are real marriages, not fake, and not involved with human trafficking, Mr. Koy Kuong said. It was the second time the government had imposed such a ban.

I'd like that the article went into more detail.
I'd really like to know what the woman's prison record has to do with human-trafficking. Does being an ex-con make one more likely to be trafficked? |

"they" refers to South Korean men, although taken out of context it could be construed ambiguously. However it would be illogical for the South Korean men to prove the Cambodian women had clean records. |

Would providing a clean korean criminal record check qualify yoou as a suitable future husband? Would it ensure that you do not beat up or abuse your future cambodian bride?
Domestic abuse and assault, public drunkeness, traffic violations and racism are not criminal offences in this country, they would not register on any check. |

How about mandatory AIDS tests before the Korean men could obtain a one-year M-1 marriage visa for Cambodians, as I read somewhere a statistic that says 90% of Korean men who want a Cambodian bride have AIDS, so it must be true. As well, perhaps a government cultural awareness class where they could learn about Cambodia? We would of course want notarized transcripts proving the men are qualified to be husbands, as there are so many Korean husbands with false credentials lately.
Naturally, the Korean men would have to go to Fukuoka for the visas and would have to front the money themselves. If there weren't enough Cambodian women to go around, the visa and visa run costs would not be repaid, as this reflects the past tendency for Korean men to not show up to claim their brides.
Juuust kidding. |

the criminal record check and income verification statement should be required to be apostilled by some far away, non-cooperative bureaucratic entity. |

And the marriage visa can be revoked before the one-year baby bonus is paid, if the employing bride is in any way dissatisfied with the husband's performance.
In case of any contract disputes, the Cambodian version will be considered binding. |

You left out, "...or better yet, by some nonexistant agency that the Cambodian government says Korea has but Korea not only does not have it now, never has had it, and also has no intention of ever having it."
That's pretty much one stunt the South Korean government pulled not so long ago. |

You are asking the wrong person. I am against all these criminal checks. |

Yes, good job, Cambodia. The Koreans made their gender imbalance, let all the guys enjoy each other . Besides, wouldn't marrying non-Koreans be a bad thing since it goes against their "pure blood" philosophy here. |

Appearance matters more than reality: as long as nonKoreanness can be hidden and offspring raised as Korean then all is okay. Koreans have been *beep* by the Japanese, Chinese, Mongolians for ages. |

Doesn't this pretty much applies to the entire human race?
some "other" race has always been raped by others and vice versa. |
