My friend just renewed his contract with GEPIK.
His contract ends in the begining of May and he was going to take a flight home during summer break (Late July - early August). But decided that he's just going to keep the money.
His handler calculated the cost of the flight reimbursement based on May fares (Assuming he'd take the flight home after his contract was finished which isn't possible since hes renewing)
In a nut shell, hes being shorted 500,000 won because the handler assumed he wouldn't renew (The difference between KAL May & KAL July / August prices)
His hander claims, the contract isn't specific about time and hes supposed to be paid 2 weeks after his renewal
Has anyone gone through something similar? How did you handle it? Does he need to talk to GEPIK? |

CHECK THE NEW GEPIK contract. I am SURE that the airfare is flat rated and NOT based on the actual airfare anymore.
Download the NEW one from the GEPIK website if the handler is miffing about with it.

I was told the same thing from GEPIK so I believe that handler is correct.
I was paid the estimated airfare money within 2 weeks of finishing my contract and then I went on my trip home 6 months later. Seems reasonable to me that all money matters of the previous contract should be settled asap. |

His renewal isn't based on this year's contract but, last years. If he renews next year it'll be based on this years.
Anyway, are you sure your not confusing GEPIK with EPIK?
GEPIK hasn't changed any clauses in the contract and there's no flat rate

What do you mean by estimated airfare? What is the estimate based on and exactly when is the estimate made? Airfares in peak travel seasons are higher |

The estimate is based on the Korean Air Fare price on the internet for any day near the contract end date.
My contract ended during peak travel season so I guess I made some money. Who knew |

You are correct and I stand corrected.
They (GEPIK) still offer to pay the full fare for an economy ticket to the airport nearest to the NETs residence of record.
Personally, I would buy a (refundable) Korean Air ticket for the "dates" of travel, submit the receipt and expect reimbursement based on that. That is a fight he can take to GEPIK.
After the matter is settled, refund the ticket (KAL only charges 30k won for the cancellation). It will, however, unless he uses a credit card take 30 days for a cash refund to appear in his bank account from KAL. Use a KAL ticket office (rather than a travel agent) to make refund smoother.

My co-teacher wanted to get my airline ticket processed right away, but I told her that I could do this and you just need to refund the money to me right away. Her answer was the school has a cc and they would do it. I happened to be printing out two flights on the date I was leaving with Korean Air when she mentioned this and I handed the paper. When she asked for the amount her jaw nearly dropped. She said that is too expensive. My response was that 1. there is no limit to the amount according to my contract. 2. It requires the most direct(only one stop required then I am home) flight to my home. To shorten the story it seemed she was doing the leg work for the ladies in the office and when I asked if she gave the information to the ladies she said yes,but I noticed the co-teacher getting a text in the middle of class that may have had something to with my flight information. I am sorry for the long story, but question is if they have booked a flight with another airline that makes three stops and is not the most direct to my home do I have a leg to stand on to have them change it? I checked and it seemed that all the other airlines that offer a flight to my home with 2-3 stops charge the same amount as KA. Maybe they got a deal from a travel agent. Thanks |

Article 10 sub 4 of the GEPIK contract:
4. In the event a renewing Employee travels to his/her home country, Employee will be reimbursed for his/her round-trip airfare based on economy class airfare of the flight available from Incheon to the airport nearest to Employees residence within 2 weeks upon return to Korea.
Article 10 sub 6 of the GEPIK contract:
6. In the event Employee does not travel to his/her home country, Employee will be given the amount of money equivalent to the round-trip airfare based on the economy class rate of Korean Airline within 2 weeks upon renewal of Contract. Vacation is used in the manner pursuant to the foregoing 3.
3. In the case of renewal of this contract pursuant to the foregoing 1, Employee shall be given a fourteen day (14) (weekend and national holidays inclusive) additional home leave vacation period which is extra, beyond the yearly paid leave. Home leave must be taken during the vacation periods not conflicting with school schedules either just before or just after the contract year is completed
So it says they have to give you the money that YOU would have to pay if you traveled during the VACATION break.
It doesn't say that they can't book it (or give you the value of a ticket booked now for travel on those dates).
Key is TRAVEL on THOSE dates.

Does anyone have a reasonable answer(withholding the cracks, please) to my question? I am on the 2009 contract of Gepik. Thanks |

hochhasd this same thing happened to me in Feb
I took a vacation home during my vacation time and kept the receipt. My co-teacher didn't like the fact that it was actually over 2 million won so she found a better quote which she used to stiff me out of 1,200K
Also, the last contract says that if you dont go home, you get 2 mil won (which they decided I didn't need, hence new contract rules)
The school may (probably will) go by the newer contract, or whatever saves them money.
Also, keep in mind, that the school will try to use some BS Korean website (Naver, onlinetour.co.kr) to quote you the lowest rate. Happened to me. |

Still seems like a fairer deal than the 1,300,000 won that SMOE is giving to non-renewing teachers. With summer high season fares. A lot of people are getting shafted. |

How are they getting shafted? Did they not sign their contracts and agree to the terms?
There's plenty of things wrong with SMOE. But people only have themselves to blame for either signing a crappy contract or failing to look ahead and realize that summer is going to be a high peak travel time with corresponding high fares. |

How about those that renewed previously and like the school they are in? It isn't as though SMOE asked for the input of the workers. Also those that are completing their contract can't book their flight in advance or with a non Korean airline |

Then we are not talking about those people are we?

Certainly they can book their flight in advance. I do it all the time. As for a non-Korean airline...what country are we in again? |

I will not be renewing and the should be going by my 2009 contract. The contract states the most direct flight. So, if Korean Air is offering a flight for 2,165,000 won with one stop it lands at my home,I thought the school has to book (I gave my k teacher the print out for Korean Air)the most direct according to the contract and can not complain about the money because there is no price set on my contract. Gepik gives them the money for the flight. If they book a flight on a non Korean Air flight, but on one that does not offer the most direct flight for less, can I complain or will I be wasting my time. They used their credit card. |
