NASHVILLE A proposal that would make it illegal to sell fake urine for the purpose of falsifying a drug test is headed for a vote by the full Senate.
The measure sponsored by Democratic Sen. Doug Jackson of Dickson was unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday and will now be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor.
Jackson says the measure is needed to help companies that do drug testing. He says individuals who use fake urine to try to beat the system create a "public safety issue" because many companies are trying to maintain a drug-free environment.
The legislation would provide an exception for "bona fide educational, medical, and scientific purposes."
The companion bill was approved 96-0 in the House last month. |
Your elected officials at work.
I thought about putting this in off-topic, but it actually is in the news, so what the heck!

If that is the actual wording, I wouldn't be to worried about it. It would still be legal to sell real urine for purposes of falsifying a drug test.
I should have been a lawyer. What happened to Kuros anyway? |

Anyway, rather than illegalizing the sale of fake urine, organizations engaged in drug testing should simply stop testing in such a fashion that its purchase and use is effective. Have your drug test if you want, but either use testing means other than urine (hair and blood are both effective for a lot of drugs, aren't they?), or limit yourself to on-the-spot drug tests rather than announcing them in advance, such that people can't prepare.
Or companies could just chill out about drug testing; who cares if your workers are using drugs if they're performing adequately? And if they aren't performing adequately, drugs or no you have cause to let them go. Either way, this law is ridiculous. |

+1
Really when it comes to drug tests all anyone really is talking about is pot. The others are gone in a day or two OR are so life-destabilizing that you can just fire people anyway for when they fail to show up or pass out in the bathroom. |

It's a bizarre behavior in America. I've worked in 5 nations. Only drug tested in the US. At a private company no less. It is a gross violation of privacy. |

Well you know, Mises, from a libertarian perspective, a private company should have the right to test its employees for whatever they want, and if the employees don't like it, they can always sell their labour elsewhere.
Of course, by the same token, employees should have the right to buy and ingest chemicals that flush drugs out of the system before taking the urine test. |
