My hogwon owner recently fired an employee and has told her that her last day will be on April 30. This is 3 days before her 6 month mark. The owner is doing this so she has to pay back her recruiter's fee (1 million) and her deposit (600,000) won't be refunded.
I've been at this school for about 8 months and am now worried that the owner might try to to fire me right before 1 year so that he doesn't have to pay me my severance. Is there anything I can do about this? |

No, if you are worried that much, resign. If you stay and he does fire you just prior to when your contarct ends, you will have a good case to take to the MOL. They are starting to punish owners severely for this practice. Why does she have to pay back the recruiter's fee? Is it stipulated in your contract? Normally the recruiter would be responsible for finding a new teacher at no cost. The recruiting fee is not you problem, your director chose to use a recruiter. |

I am kind of curious where it states that the employee has to pay for the recruiters fees.
If someone said that crap to me, I'd just do a midnight flight next day, and leave em SCREWED over.
Yup I would probably call 24hrs of longdistance too, or call my mom and tell her not to hang up the phone until I got home
I got no room in my life for greedy little weasels, like some directors are. |

It is also interesting to note that it is illegal for hagwons to hold back a deposit. They have no legal right to do this. I would get in touch with EFL law and see if there is anything they can do.. |

The contract says that if you work for less than six months at the hogwan, then you have to pay back the recruiter fee. That's why the owner has decided that my coworker will quit 3 days before her six month mark.
Also, the owner of the school has made it clear that he'll only give her a letter of release if she pays back the recruiter fee and her deposit isn't refunded. She wants to continue living and working in Korea so she has agreed to do it. |

He does if it's written into the contract and the person agreed to it. |
