I will be leaving Korea in the summer after 2 years of teaching and I plan on traveling around SE Asia for a few months. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on shipping 2 suitcases (around 40 lbs/ 18 kgs each) from Busan to the US. I am looking for the least expensive route and the time it takes is really of no importance. I am have been researching various freight companies online but I have not found a quote that isnt astronomical. Any help, links, or advice would be appreciated.

I found this post about it. I'm a bit nervous as I need to ship home 2 suitcases and it sounds like the only way you can do that is if you meet the bags at the port and I doubt there'll be any ships going to where I live...

My suggestion..which you may not like...is just to sell your suitcases. Sell them on Koreabridge and then just mail home everything in boxes. You can get these post boxes at any post office and there are various sizes to choose from. If you send it by snail mail (not express air mail) it's pretty cheap but it will take a month or two to get there.

I mailed home a 29kg suitcase from Seoul to Canada by airmail from the post office last year. It got there in 2 days. I paid under 200,000 won. 30kg is the max weight the post office will ship. They just covered it with two boxes and taped it all up for me. You can also send it by sea, it would be a lot cheaper.

The Canada post office delivered it right to my parents' door. The whole process was easy and painless.

Check with your airline about their excess checked baggage fee. Asiana charged me $110 USD per bag. The fee probably varies depending on your destination.

I have the same issue as the original poster and want to send a suitcase home before travelling SE Asia.
I May bring my suitcase to the post office here then and try sending it home by boat. Hopefully they will accept a large suitcase like one of the previous posters was able to do.
