Quote:
World leaders arriving in Washington for President Obama's Nuclear Security Summit must have felt for a moment that they had instead been transported to Soviet-era Moscow.

They entered a capital that had become a military encampment, with camo-wearing military police in Humvees and enough Army vehicles to make it look like a May Day parade on New York Avenue, where a bicyclist was killed Monday by a National Guard truck.

In the middle of it all was Obama -- occupant of an office once informally known as "leader of the free world" -- putting on a clinic for some of the world's greatest dictators in how to circumvent a free press.

The comparison with the Soviet Union is apt except people can make profit. We basically have an empire, a Julius Caesar de jour, surrounded by the Pretorian Guard, and the patricians are in charge and the plebians are told to fall in and the leader who was supposed to be a really voice for the plebians is directing various wars.

The press is a joke. The various news networks might as well be called Pravda. Fox News with it's fair and balanced mantra reminds me of the Soviet paper, Pravda, since pravda means truth in Russian. CNN isn't much better. What the military does is hardly investigated, covered. Only what serves the interests of the military and certain elites receives proper coverage. People might say that's paranoia, but I find after finding alternative news that the media drops the ball over and over and fails to cover things on purpose.

The media? There was more of a media during the Cronkite days...

Strange how the other usual current events posters haven't thrown their 2 cents into this thread.

Obama saturation?

It's getting pretty predictable how he is going to act in any given situation, and this simply doesn't come as a surprise. As a result of this, neither side can really be bothered attacking or defending, as it will end the same way all these threads do.

Can this really be defended? The same guy who trumpeted transparency and openness?

Not really. I'm sure plenty will try though.

I hope nobody will misconstrue the following as a defense of Obama.

Dana Milbank is a little bitch.

Quelle surprise! I was expecting the laxest of lax security for a conference including the heads of China, Russia, the EU, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Korea, Turkey, and some 40 other nations. I did not see that coming. Big props to Dana Milbank for the heads up.

I agree, always thought tight security was par for the course at such events.
