I am a male, and I find I get a huge amount of attention from the high school girls. At first it was kinda cute, now it is getting weird. They asked me what I thought of Korean girls, and which girl I would choose in the class. They visit me pretty every day between classes and particularly during cleaning time. They bring me candy and food. One girl just brought me some grape juice and a rice cake. This was already strange enough. But, what is really weird to me is one of the male Korean English teachers asked me if I thought any of the high school girls here were cute. Two of the other teachers have asked me if I like "mini-skirts", which in the context I think meant the girls again. So, is this normal? And please tell me it goes away. It seems very awkward, to me.

It's pretty normal. Korea is much like America was in the fifties very innocent. It's highly unlikely that anything will become of this. In a few months when the novelty of being the first foreign teacher they've met has worn off you'll be a ghost.

Normal, just a phase and will be over once your novelty wears off and when they they start to bore of your classes.

i'm a female teacher at an all girls highschool. i don't think what you're going through is abnormal or bad. the girls are always telling me i'm pretty and if i think they're pretty. they give me snacks as gifts too. they also visit me frequently and most of them giggle whenever i talk to them. they're just your typical innocent and naive korean girls. i get awkward compliments daily from male teachers at the school... in the states, some of it would seem inappropriate but i feel like most of these things are harmless in this country.

I agree. It's innocent. But be careful what you say. You never know if one of them has a xenophobic parent or a parent in AES.

It's completely normal and completely innocent. I wouldn't read too much into that type of behavior. If you suck (personality and attitude wise), then the novelty for them will wear off. Just take it for what it is (it's nothing more than kids being curious and wanting to be friendly).

It's definitely normal. Koreans tend to be open about things that we would consider sexual harassment in the US.

A lot of them do it to gauge a reaction from you and their fellow classmates. Then if you do something that's semi-flirtatious back, they'll talk to their friends about it in Korean like.. "haha wow, what a creep!" lol it's a game, but c'mon, they're only kids! Smile

I'd wonder more about the other teachers who are asking him what he thinks. Laughing
