I know there's a sticky about where to practice martial arts, but I was kind of hoping for an ongoing discussion of current events, speculation, reactions, etc. in the sport (particularly MMA).
I've been a long-time lurker at the Sherdog forums and think it would be fun to start something like that in this thread. Obviously, use spoiler tags when necessary.
I'll start off with...
*SPOILER*
That cut on Sanchez's head was probably one of the most disgusting cuts I've seen in the sport. His lower lip was looking equally good. I guess Sanchez needs to continue to refine his "Yes cartwheel".
I must admit that the Kongo Mir fight has me severely depressed. I really wanted to see Kongo bash that chronic smirk off of Mir's face; although I still think the outcome would still have been the same in the end 90 times out of 100 : /
It almost pains me to think how long it will be before Brock and Mir face off in the octagon again. I can't wait to see Brock absolutely crush Mir both mentally and physically. |

| oh man that cut was bad. i cant believe it took so long to see it as well. i know he had his head pinned against penn, but man that was a ton of blood. i thought guida got cut pretty bad earlier until that. dana had a huge smile on his face when he shook penn's hand, mainly because up until that point it was becoming a rather boring fight to watch. yeah i dont think mir should be talking all tough about hurting brock. i just dont see that happening if they fight again. |

I think it's also because when Dana looks at BJ, he sees cash, and lots of it. Unfortunately, the UFC has no one else to put in front of BJ... he's pretty much cleaned out the whole division. Unless BJ decides to start fighting in higher weight classes again, the UFC won't make as much as BJ has the potential to bring in PPV money. |

In non-UFC news, 5-time World's Strongest Man champ Mariusz "Super Mariusz" Pudzianowski made his MMA debut recently against Marcin Najman (pretty much just a boxer).
http://www.mmatko.com/mariusz-pudzianowski-vs-marcin-najman-fight-video-ksw-12-mma/
His competition was a joke, but you can't help but be at least a bit interested in seeing what a man as strong as Mariusz could do in the world of fighting. Unfortunately, I don't ever see him being able to cut enough weight to make it under 265 pounds (also read, in order to fight in the UFC), nor do I think he could make it very far before he gases. Still, he'd be impossible to submit and I think if he got ahold of you, you are pretty much dead--a bear hug would suffice. |

huge disagreement with you on that... i thought it was a great fight.
and yes, that cut was nasty. diego was pretty busted up when that fight was finally stopped. bj put a serious beating on him.
bloopity... i think there are still some very interesting fights for bj at 155:
frankie edgar, gray maynard, tyson griffin to name a few. |

| bj was hitting him good a couple times a round, but sanchez just kept trying to take him down and would have him pinned on the cage, never got him down and was never close to getting bj down. i just thought it was kinda slow for the majority of the rounds. there was about 1 to 1.5 min of exciting minutes a round. the first minute and last minute of the fight were the best in my opinion. |

I don't know why people were talking Kongo up to actually have a chance against Mir. Judging from what Mir dished out on his feet against Noguiera, it was no surprise, at least to me, that Kongo really had no distinct advantages over Mir.
I'd like to see a rubber match with Mir and Lesnar as I think Mir seems a bit more focused and dedicated to really beating him.... last time served as a "feeler" for Mir after a quick kneebar sub their first go around.
Kind of disappointed that Denis Kang got cut but he really looked bad against a surprising Bisping. I think Bisping's chin is suspect, but his ground and stand up game looked pretty darn sharp. Can't see him beating Wand or other MW's like Franklin or Marquardt
Overall, I think LW, MW and WW are on lockdown with Penn, GSP, and Silva and no real challengers anytime soon. Kind of the same stuff now when it comes to those guys.
What I'm interested in seeing more of is LHW and HW battles. Unfortunately injuries and sickness have plagued those fights. I'm also looking forward to Strikeforce and what they have to offer. Dana White is a big ol' d-bag if you ask me and I'd like to see him get burned. |

kongo's striking is crisp... not too many guys can stand with him... that said, he has not looked good in his last two fights. maybe he is a bit overrated. see how he bounces back from this one before i make the call on him.
mir/lesnar 3 is inevitable... so long as lesnar gets healthy... doesn't look like we'll be seeing him any time soon though... he might not be ready till march or april... which really stinks.
there are plenty of fights for penn and silva... it's gsp who is need of challengers. silva has belfort, marquart, and even okami would be interesting... being that he beat silva back in pride... silva has since become the matrix... but okami's style could still pose problems for silva... and by that i mean it would be a challenge... though i don't see okami winning that fight.
interestingly, silva only has 3 fights left on his contract... i think there's a good chance he signs with strikeforce... for the chance to fight fedor, moussasi and maybe henderson.
strikeforce has some really nice talent... both free agents and up and comers... up and comers like moussasi, luke rockhold, tyrone woodley, and king mo.
really looking forward to fedor's next fight, the thomson/melendez title, the shield/henderson (not signed but probable), and the next nick diaz fight (hope its jay hieron). |

Yeah I agree Kongo's striking is crisp, but compared to what Mir showed against Noguiera, I didn't feel Kongo's striking was any better than Mir's.
As for Penn, besides a rematch with Florian, I can't see anyone posing a threat unless UFC signs Aoki. But even then, Penn is going to reign for quite some time. As for Okami "beating" Silva, I would see it was more of a disqualification than a victory. Silva was pretty much dominating that fight until an illegal kick gave Okami the "W." I'm going to say Silva retires after his contract, going down as the most dominant fighter (undefeated) in the UFC.
I'd like to see GSP take a jump up to 185, but he is kind of small for a WW (although he looks jacked, word is that he is all but 5'9-10 in person) compared with a 6'2 Silva, 6'1 Marquardt, etc. who both walk around at 210+
I'd keep an eye out for Gegard Mousassi.... I think he is going to be the next big thing. He's 23-24 years old and has fought many of the who's who in MMA. I am a big Hendo fan though and am really looking forward to seeing that fight. I hope Hendo pounds the crap out of the boring and douche-baggish Jake Shields.
There are definitely going to be many interesting fights looming. Can't wait to see what Strikeforce can dig up (probably sign Denis Kang and maybe Houston Alexander). |

| MMA is ok, until they hit the ground and start grappling, which they always do. Most of the match is spent on their backs on the mat. K1 is more my cup of tea for entertainment value. |

I enjoy submission attempts and ground and pound. But for the ex-collegiate wrestlers, I despise when they hit the ground. They do the "lay and pray" for a decision - so lame. |

I guess that's an obstacle the sport needs to conquer if it wants to attain the mainstream success of entities like the NBA, NFL, etc. For a lot of people like me, though, we enjoy the grappling just as much as the striking. It's very cerebral and people who practice the sport can really appreciate what these guys can do. People all over the world play soccer, basketball, and baseball--and maybe that's part of the reason people love them so much (although I still don't understand how people could enjoy soccer--God...). They can relate to those sports because they've played them. Most people have never touched a wrestling mat or spent time in a non-McDojo martial arts environment, have never been exposed to combat sports, and thus cannot connect to them in the same way as ball-and-stick sports.
I do also enjoy K-1, however. *SPOILER* The latest GP was pretty entertaining. Lots of interesting match-ups, the bad blood between the K-1 guys and the black sheep (Ubereem), etc. Sorry Hari, maybe next time! |

Penn and the other dude....
Ok, which one was the guy who broke up five rounds of being punched in the face with the occasional crappy leg shoot attempt? |

Diego "nightmare" Sanchez
but more of a dream come true for Bj Penn (who I'm surprised is not praised more in Korea being that his grandmother is Korean) |
