|
|
Hey folks thought since we have a EPIK thread on the forum, I though we GEPIKers could do with one to compare interview dates, experiences etc.
I've applied to a bunch of recruiters and have only had the introductory phone call with the guy/gal in charge of my application.
Whats the deal with everyone else? |

I'm thinking about applying through GEPIK. I read on the GEPIK website that they will be accepting applications from November 25th onwards. Do you know how locations are designated? My understanding is that although you're able to give location preferences, due to them having to locate teachers according to where they are needed, it is unlikely that these preferences will be met. |

There are some right shitholes within GEPIK - let me tell ya - are you not allowed to pick your school anymore? If that were the case that would be absolutley horrible! |

Shitholes in terms of locations or schools? Or both? Some places in Gyeonggi look quite nice, like Siheung and Bucheon. I'm not 100% certain but it doesn't look like you can pick your schools; it only looks like you can state a location preference and a preference for what age group you'd like to teach. |

What happened with me (last year) was that I filled in a GEPIK application form with the preference of being near a subway station (tick that box - its really important) and they matched me with a school which I could accept or refuse - the subway station was a 10 minute bus ride away so it wasn't too bad.
Siheung and Bucheon are pretty nice actually - just get yourself near the subway which should be no problem in either place. |

Received an email from my recruiter today saying I was conditionally approved for GEPIK and need to fill out documents before I can be "officially" approved. The hiring manager of GEPIK told me that I would be sent a list of schools with open positions in mid December and would need to let her know which ones I would like to be considered for. Were any of the other GEPIK applicants told this? I interviewed with Clara through my recruiter. If this is in fact the case any recommendations on schools/areas to look for. I am a first time teacher if that makes any difference. |

For location, look at a subway map. If you are not used to country living, then don't go further south than Suwon. If you take anything north of Seoul, then realize transportation will suck going into Seoul. It's much better if you live south of Seoul, north of Suwon.
If you like Bucheon, then you might want to also consider EPIK which I understand handles Incheon. I live in Bupyeong, and it's only 10 minutes away from Bucheon. Nice area.
I don't know about the southeastern area. |

Cheers for the advice. I'm considering EPIK though, since the application process for March is already a month old, I wouldn't be confident of securing a place in Incheon if I applied now. |

I am back in the market.
I've asked for rural locales so I may not necessarily be heading for GEPIK, but staying has some advantages. |

I just applied for a job at Pyungtaek Hyunduck Elementary School through an agency named Teach ESL Korea. Has anyone taught at this School? If anyone has worked with Teach ESL Korea, I would really appreciate some feedback: Did you have a good experience? Has anyone worked with this agency? I would really love some feedback because this will be my first experience teaching AND traveling to Asia and honestly, I'm pretty nervous. Can anyone offer me some advice/feedback? |

A few good and others rotten in Suwon, Ilsan and Pyeongtaek, too. I hear so many people complain about GEPIK. |

I am asuming that the the teacher's contract is up. The start date for the job is March 30 so I'm assuming that the current teacher hasn't renewed her contract. It makes me feel a little better that the projected start date is a few months away. What do you think? |

The Gyeonggi Office of education has pretty well thrown all recruiting over to recruiters and schools to do themselves for next year. This means that you really do have to make contact with a good recruiter who has got the inside running and connections to schools in Gyeonggii Province areas and also know about the vacancies about to come out.
It is not an even playing field for GEPIK jobs, so it is impossible to make any assumptions on 'the program' any longer as the control and management of who gets hired where and when,is up to the individual schools and their principals.
Gyeonggi's EPIK (GEPIK) is not run like the EPIK program where everyone comes in en masse at the same time. twice a year. Most GEPIK positions will have the visa process done in immigration and teachers will get a visa number, where as all EPIK teachers get the notice of appointment directly from the Ciry or provincial Office of Education POE |
