I teach some girl middle school students. We have been using BNE.com for a while and it's pretty good except sometimes the topics are not appropriate. Does anyone know of a similar site catered for them?

I also like BNE for my adult students (Korean teachers). I have used stories from National Geographic Kids as a replacement for my Jr. High students.

Nat. Geo. Kids is not well prepared for ESL use like BNE. I use the format of a BNE story as a model and then rework the Nat. Geo. Kids story to fit the same format. I cut, paste and replace some of the higher level vocabulary in the Nat. Geo. Kids stories with more common, easy to understand words. I then cut and past some of the discussion questions from BNE, changing as needed to make appropriate for the Net. Geo. story. The Nat. Geo. Kids stories are for sure more work than the near ready to use BNE stories, but "doable" with a little more prep. time.

PS: If you check youtube you can sometimes find a video clip to go with the Nat. Geo. story. For example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRKJQ15W_FY

In this example I would cut the clip just to show the penguin with his suit, then cut to the penguins swimming around. I would set it a musical background. I show it to the kids about half way through the lesson just to keep them interested in the story to keep working on it.
