i posted elsewhere a story about a friend of mine who had to leave his house becasue of a volcano.

i observed there that i have so much stuff that if i had to leave here in the face of natural disaster or war i would be like steve martin's character in "the jerk" stumbling down the street with arms laden with musical instruments and sundry junk.

so - what would yu grab if yu had to leave in a hurry? not doing a runner voluntarily - but in a situation of danger.

passport of course, but... any precious things yu'd grab?

i actually know a real nutter in brisbane who keeps a bag packed with supplies just in case. he keeps his house shuttered and dark too...

url fixed up clg

All of my important paperwork is in a folder near my bed with copies in another folder in my school and another folder at my friend's house. One of those should suffice. My laptop comes with me. Frankly, I could be up and out of my place in under 10 minutes with everything I "need": change of clothes, laptop, phone, camera, documents.

I really am not a person that acquires many posessions, even in America. My entire life fits into my old Mazda Protege and it isn't even packed. I have even fewer things here in Korea.

Yesterday we were a bit threatened by a fire (my neighbor, who knows never to wake me up, did so, so I knew it was close).

I stood there watching three security guards with little red fire extinguishers scratching their heads and watching the fire, which was 100 feet from my balcony, and decided I should grab all of my photos. If had time, I would get into my safe and get my passport and Yankee dollars. About then a couple of firetrucks showed up.

I have a lot of photos here from the last several years, and have been working on getting them all on disk, so I can have a set in a safe place. My neighbors in Alaska got burned out one year. They said that the only thing that pained them, after a couple of years, was the loss of photos. I guess that has stuck with me.

What is simply irreplaceable? Not even the passport and the money (although in another kind of emergency, those are necessary.)

I like to avoid the build up of material possessions in my life, it restricts your freedom. Ideally i'd like to carry all I own in a single bag.
At a moment's notice? passport, cash, photo album. thats it....

if you're not leaving the country in a hurry, you can also get your passport replaced. I dont see why so many people want to take their passport. Unless you have a crap embassy like the US one
